Abnormal smear and lump on groin

Hi I am a lady in my early 40's and this is my story so far. I had a smear test at the end of May 2021 and a couple of weeks a go recieved a letter saying I was high risk hpv positive and it had shown  cell changes since then I have also found a lump on my groin around where the lymph nodes are which is causing me concern has anyone else had thus experience? I am currently waiting on a colposcopy screening but this can take up to 8 weeks. I have not been to the doctor about lump yet as wanted to give it a couple of weeks to see if it would go away.

This is my second time of dealing with abnormal cells as I did have them around 14 years ago which back then was diagnosed as cin3 and I recieved treatment to get rid of the cells.

My main worry this time even though I have been up to date with all my smears is that I have had the same sexual partner for over 20 years which means I have had the hpv this whole time as well does that mean it has been laying dormant or could it be that it has beenquietly reaking havoc in my cervix and it just  hasn't been picked up on before?

I have had a brown watery discharge a couple of times and occasional spotting, I have also been having back problems for a year now but not sure this is connected as I properly put my back out one of those times and couldn't move for a few days. The lump is causing me a lot of anxiety as I am almost positive it is my lymph node.

  • Hi Pinky and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry about the lump you've found on your groin and for the worry this is causing. Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will share their experiences with you soon but fingers crossed it goes away on its own.

I know you were asking about HPV in your post so I just wanted to share some information we have about this on our website. I hope this answers your question and puts your mind at ease but if you'd like to talk things through with one our cancer nurses you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Wishing you all the best with your colposcopy when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks for the reply I am trying not to worry too much at this stage but having had cin 3 cells before it kind of makes me anxious that it may have gone further this time. I am going to make a gp appointment towards the end of the week as unfortunately the lump doesn't seem to be going anywhere and that has been a couple of weeks now maybe it will speed up colposcopy appointment or at least give me some answers or peace of mind.
