Very worried about suspicious mole

Hello all,

Had an appointment with a consultant dermatologist yesterday about a blob on my nose that might be a BCC. While I was there, she asked to look all my (many) moles. All good apart from one small dark one on my upper arm. She asked me how long I had had it, (since I was a child). I am so good at monitoring my moles but I thought this one was ok as it hadn't got bigger, itched etc. She showed me the dermatascope picture of it and it has a black dot in the middle which I had never noticed. She's told me to keep an eye on it and she'll have a look at it again in 4 months. I am freaking out a bit and wondering if I should get it whipped off now anyway?

  • Hi,

Please don't freak out over it. It's good that the dermatologist picked up on it but she obviously doesn't think it needs removal unless it changes (it could have had the black dot since it first appeared). They very often suggest monitoring a mole and in most cases there are no changes and they are happy to leave them. My niece has had dysplastic (pre-cancerous) moles removed in the past & they often monitor one or more of her moles - they don't change so they are happy the moles are benign.

If you are worried that any subtle changes aren't picked up quickly enough, you can do the following every 2 weeks. Photograph the mole & put a ruler alongside so it shows the measurement. In that way you can see from the photos if there are any subtle changes in size, colour or shape & you can ask for your appointment to be brought forward. This will help you feel in control of the situation and may help to calm your worries while waiting for the next appointment.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)

  • Hi Angie,

Thanks so much for your for your quick and sensible response. As my husband said, if the derm had concerns she would have  recommended immediate removal - it's her job to be thorough.

Just scared me a bit that it was such an inocuous looking mole and now I can't stop peering it at it!

    Really appreciate you replying x
