Breast lump post pregnancy not breastfeeding

Hi all,

I recently found a hard breast lump 9 weeks postpartum. I've been so worried and scanned this forum desperately looking for a similar story to help give me hope it could be okay and put my mind at rest. I've found it such a safe space and so helpful but I didn't find a story like mine where it was postpartum and not breastfeeding so I wanted to share mine in case anyone else like me looks and needs to see this.

I was referred to the breast clinic and had a mammogram and ultrasound and was told immediately it was a cyst and it was aspirated. So I wanted to share my experience in case there is anyone in the same boat looking for a positive story to help them through the horrendous two week waits.

I was actually at the breast clinic last year after I thought I found a lump. The doctor said immediately it wasn't but sent me for a mammogram anyway because of my age (I'm 42). They then found a lesion and calcifications that were graded a 3 meaning I required a biopsy as they couldn't tell by looking if it was malignant or benign. I felt so scared during the two week wait. In fact it was one of the most upsetting times as I think most women here have felt. I was so so lucky to be told it was benign. So finding an actual lump this time was a huge scare and I definitely felt that I couldn't be lucky twice. The clinic were amazing and said immediately it felt nodular and would likely be caused by hormones due to the pregnancy. The consultant confirmed it via the ultrasound and did a fine needle aspiration on the spot.

As lucky as I am and I feel hugely grateful, this group has really helped me through the last two weeks. Women who have had a diagnosis sharing their story helped me prepare for a diagnosis and feel like I would be okay should that happen. So thank you everyone, sharing your stories so helps.

Wishing all 'chatters' positivity.

Best

K

  • Hello K and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm really glad the forum was able to help you during your breast lump scare and I'm so pleased your lump was benign.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us K. I'm sure your story, just like all the ones you came across during your anxious wait, will really help those in a similar situation.

    Kind regards,

    Hi KL78,

Thank you for your update. It is so helpful when people come back to us with good stories and, I'm delighted to hear that you got the all clear. Hormones play havoc with our bodies during pregnancy, so it is not uncommon to notice changes in your breasts post-partum.

Unfortunately, this doesn't make the waiting time any less worrying and, I'm glad that you found this forum a safe space. I sincerely hope that you don't have any more scares, but please remember that we are always here if you do.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi K,

I'm 8 weeks postpartum (not breastfeeding) and I'm just starting my two week wait for a scan on a lump I have found in my breast. Thanks for sharing your story!
