Excision of suspected melanoma

Hi

I am really anxious about waiting for the results of my excision biopsy that was taken from the back of my hand. When I went for my consultion with my dermatologist, he examined my hand and said that  I I needed a biopsy. 3 days later I got a phone call to go on Saturday the 29th of May 2021 to have the procedure, when I arrived I thought I was getting a shaved biopsy but the surgeon that was going to do the procedure said that my doctor wanted an excision done. And then when the surgeon looked at the back of my hand , he was literally shocked and asked me how long It had been there. So as you can imagine from being told I was having the excision and the surgeon's reaction, I  have not  been feeling the most positive.

I am very scared and anxiously awaiting the result, I will phone my GP on Friday and see if they have my results , fingers crossed.

  • Hi Maggie53,

I know how anxious you must be whilst waiting for the results to come back. Did they give you any indication as to how long they would take and how you would be informed? I ask because at the moment results are taking an average of 6 weeks depending on each hospital area. They would normally contact you by phone or letter, sometimes with an appointment to go back & see them as they prefer to give news, good or bad, face to face. This is especially important if they want to check any other moles the patient may have. They do send the results to the GP but it's not recommended that you ask for them from the GP as they may not be cognisant of the terminolgy used in a skin biopsy histology report (I know of some patients who were given the wrong result by employees at GP practices).

So my advice is not to ring your GP on Friday for that reason and they probably won't have them yet anyway. I know how hard it is to get through each day with it hanging over your head but sadly you have to be patient. If you haven't heard anything in 2 weeks time I would ring the hospital and ask if your results are back yet and how long before you are contacted. Meanwhile, try to distract yourself by keeping busy in some way. There is still a good chance that the results are benign - no one, not even consultants, can tell if a mole is cancerous - only a biopsy can do that. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank you for your reply, they didn't say anything about how they would contact me. The information you have given me has helped me a lot. I will definitely let you know how things go. Thank you again ️
