Thyroid Cancer

Hi all

I have recently been diagnosed with thyroid cancer as I found a lump on my nodule, I have an appointment with the surgeon on Thursday but I got a phone call from the hospital that I have to go for a ct scan and I'm wondering dose every thyroid cancer treatment start with a ct scan or did something show up in the blood sample showing that there is cancer somewhere else.

Regards

Darren

  • Hi Darren87

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. Undoubtedly it's an anxious time for you.

It's fairly standard after a cancer diagnosis for Consultants to order additional tests. This is done to see how big the cancer is and whether it has spread. This is called staging and these tests can include a CT scan. You can read more about this subject on our website here

Hopefully, your appointment on Thursday will give you more clarification and reassurance about things but you may find it helpful to have a chat with one of our nruses ahead of that meeting. I'm sure they will be able to offer some advice, information, and support and will help you to think about the points that you may want to raise with the Consultant. If you would like to talk with them at any point they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Keep in touch Darren and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Darren,

I'm in the same boat, hope yours went well xx

  • Hi Von59

Surgeon told me the ct scan was for him to see the structure of my neck, I had the thyroidectomy and I was in no pain afterwards, scar has nearly already blended in with my neck.

Don't worry about it  once the surgery is done everything will be back to normal, a real easy cancer to treat.

  • Thanks Darren87

Had my 3rd biopsy, another lump on the opposite side now. Still my consultant is being very thorough and is doing a neck dissection as well now, not long to wait now, thank you for your positive reply
