Recently diagnosed with papillary carcinoma of the breast

Hi,

Just joined after being diagnosed with a papillary breast cancer. Awaiting op in 2 weeks. 65 years old and trying to stay positive!

  • Hi Laura

Until they remove the tumour and thoroughly examine it they are unable to say exactly what it is and what further treatment is needed. Your mums tumour sounds really small and they have caught it early. My tumour was 19 mm and found from a routine mammogram. It is good that they are saying it is precancerous which is probably why they have not given a grade/stage. Try not to worry they are looking after her.  Keep positive for your mum.

    All the very best

  • Afternoon Liz

i hope you are well today. Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your advice. Your was on a routine also? It was a shock as it was my mums first mammogram. What I can't understand is how sure the original doctor was that have the biopsy results he said precancerous and no stage etc etc but the surgeon we met last week said small change can be invasive do they say this to all patients? He then said she will be here in ten years but wondered if that was to reassure us? I am worried if it is invasive what happens next will she have chemotherapy do you know? And do you know what it means situ? Is that cancer I'm just so confused. Please forgive me for all the questions I just can't find anyone with a similar diagnosis of papillary carcinoma xxxx thank you laura xxxx

  • Hi Laura,

l have attached a link to a pdf booklet explaining Ductal carcinoma in situ ( my papillary cancer was  initially diagnosed as papillary ductal carcinoma in situ after the biopsy)

    breastcancernow.org/.../bcn_dcis_web.pdf

l found some of the leaflets which you can download for free from the breastcancernow.org website very helpful.

As the doctors can't be sure until after surgery they have to tell you what the other possibilities could be. It was the same for me. As l said previously  papillary breast cancer is one of the less aggressive ones and according to my oncologist and what l have read it has a good prognosis. My oncologist also said l would be around in 10 years time! My tumour was termed as invasive as it some of it had grown outside of the duct. I will only be having radiotherapy and Tamoxifen which is not a chemo drug.

    Hope this helps.

    Love Liz x

  • Hi Liz

I hope you are ok today. Thank you very much for replying to me and the link you sent. It is so nice speaking to someone who understands and has a similar experience with this. Mum meets the surgeon tomorrow again before her operation on Monday they have rushed this and he said she was on his priority list I hope it's just because they are thorough and not because he's really worried about it. Did you wait very long for your results? How did you feel after your first lumpectomy? I Will be looking after my mum and hoping they will Let me wait at the hospital for her.

  • Hi Laura,

Glad that your mum is getting her surgery soon. It may be worth finding out on the day of the op whereabouts she is on the surgeons list for the day. I went to the hospital at 7.30am for day surgery and was 3rd on the list. I was however not in surgery until 3pm. They also don't let you go home after surgery until you have spent a while in the Recovery area, had something to eat and drink and become fully mobile. The surgeon will most likely also come and see her afterwards and her wound will be checked. They usually have the results ready in 10 to 14 days. Mine were given via video call.

l felt fine and adjusted the pain medication to my needs. I was given codeine and paracetamol. It was a little more painful 48 hours afterwards as the local anaesthetic block they put in along with the general anaesthetic wears off after this time. It's important that she starts the arm and shoulder exercises when they tell her. This is usually a day or so after surgery. They should give your mum a leaflet explaining them. She should already have or will be given the contact number for the specialist breast care nurses who are great and will answer any problems or worries she has during her healing.

Give her my best wishes, l will be thinking of you both. I'm sure you will do a good job in looking after her.

    Love Liz

  • Hi Liz

Thanks for your message. How are you today? We saw the surgeon today he did say early morning or afternoon but I think she will just have to wait unfortunately. She is really worried about how big the wound will be. Here is in the under left quadrant he said so cleavage area. I think she's getting very nervous and I am doing my best to reassure her. She's been told not to lift anything for 6 weeks and now she is worrying about her work. I will make sure she does her exercises so thank you for your advice with that she has already had a frozen shoulder in the past. How are you doing yourself have you started any of the hormone meds yet. Your very kind and I am thankful for your help and knowledge.

    speak soon

  • Hi Laura,

I'm doing ok. I am going to start taking the Tamoxifen next week. Reassure your mum that the surgeon will make the smallest incision possible. Mine is horizontal, under 2 inches long and in the upper part of the breast towards the underarm. The stitches were under the surface and the wound was glued, so no dressing or stitches to have taken out. I did however find it useful to have a soft gauze dressing tucked inside my bra to stop it rubbing as the end of my wound was near the under arm edge of my bra. I asked the nurse before discharge if they had anything for this and that is what they gave me.

Hope you mum has an early op as waiting around all day for it to happen is stressful. I kept in touch with my husband via texts so he knew when l was on my way to theatre and when l was back from recovery. I found all the staff to be lovely and was well looked after throughout.

All the very best to you both

  • Hi Liz

How are you? Have you started your medication yet or is it next week? Well mum was asked to go in today for surgery at 7am and was scheduled for 10 but right now she's still sat in the room waiting. I know the NHS is so busy but she's just been left all day and she's very tearful and anxious. I called to speak to the nurse to see if he can check on her and he said.... well she hasn't had anything done yet so to say I'm not happy would be an understatement. So I'm waiting to hear and hope she will be ok when I can get her home. Thanks for your advice on the dressings she is struggling getting these sports bras on and off over the head and I know she will later. Did you keep one on for two weeks like they advise? How did you find the pain and the discomfort? Xxx laura xx

  • Hi Laura,

Hope all is well with your mum. I did send a message yesterday to you via the messages section for friends, not sure how you get notified of receiving one of these. I am still wearing my sports bras as l find them more comfortable. I also sleep in one. M&S do a twin pack and they have normal bra clasps at the back so they are easier to get on.

    Thinking of you both
