Breast lump for years

Hello,

I found a lump in my boob when I was 17, I was always absolutely pretfired to tell anyone about it and have basically ignored its presence until recently (I'm now 24). I've not long had my son and know I can't ignore it any longer, for the sake of him. I went to get it examed by my GP and they're sending me for an urgent appointment at the hospital to get it looked at further, which hasn't filled me with much hope at all. The lump has gradually gotten bigger, located on the inner side near my nipple. Probably about 5cm (ish).

I am so so so scared and keep thinking of the absolute worst. I hate myself for not going sooner and keep thinking it might be too late to help me if it is cancer. I cant fathom leaving my 4 month old baby behind.

My appointment isn't for another 16 days. The longest wait ever.

    Hi Hkp,

A very warm welcome to our Forum. I am sorry to hear about your breast lump but am glad to hear that you are now getting it investigated. Please don't panic. Getting referred for an urgent appointment is normal where there is any suspicion of cancer. It doesn't mean that cancer is present. You should normally be seen within 2 weeks, but it can take a little longer in areas where the pandemic is still a problem. When you attend the clinic you will have an ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. The results of the biopsy will show whether or not there is any cancer present and if so, it will also show the type and grade of breast cancer .

Not all lumps are cancerous. Only 1 in 8 attendees at the clinic will get a cancer diagnosis. Some people have benign cysts or fibrous changes. We all tend to think the worst at this stage, but fortunately this seldom comes to pass.

Try to keep yourself busy to help the time to pass - shouldn't be hard with a young baby! Steer clear of the internet, as this will only scare you further. Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Here's hoping for good news!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

I have googled every possible outcome already unfortunately, I can't help myself. But yes, like you say, I can't help but think they worst.

I really hope I'm not that '1'. I just have a horrible gut feeling that I can't shake.

I will let you know how it goes.

  • Hello!

I just thought I would update you after finally having my appointment with the breast clinic. It was found to be a fibroadenoma.

As it is quite sizeable, I'm on a waiting list for it to be removed though they have assured me it is not harmful, I would feel better knowing it's finally gone.

Thank you so much for replying to me, it was nice to know  someone was here to talk to! I wish you well xx

    Hi Hkp,

Many thanks for your update. I am delighted to hear that this is just a fibroadenoma and nothing untoward. I can understand why you want it gone. Have they told you when you are likely to have it removed?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. I am sure that you must feel very relieved tonight.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
