Double Mastectomy and Implants

Hello,

I am having a double prophylactic mastectomy in a couple of months due to a high risk of developing bc. I am planning on having reconstruction using implants. My surgeon has offered me half silicone, half saline, permanent expander implants. They have a silicone outer edge and a small silicone pocket inside. These will then be will be inflated during surgery with saline. After a few months if I am happy with the results the ports can be removed.

These sound like a good option but I have tried to research online but can't find anything.

I was just wondering if anyone out there has had these kinds of implants and are happy with the results, as I always thought saline implants would feel alot less natural than silicone.

Thank you xx

  • Hello --.. and welcome to the forum.

I hope this information we have about breast reconstruction with implants will offer more insight in to your treatment but if you'd like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses next week (Monday - Friday) then do give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines will be open between 9a.m - 5p.m. Breast Cancer Now have some information about saline and silicone implants as well.

Hopefully some of our members who have opted for these implants will share their experiences and advice with you soon but you're welcome to use the 'search forum' option in the purple bar above to find and join in on other discussions about this as well.

Wishing you all the best with your mastectomy and reconstruction when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

    Hi,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear that you are having to undergo this surgery, but just wanted to reassure you that the double mastectomy is very straightforward. I had one 11 years ago and have never looked back. I'm afraid that I don't know anything about implants, as I couldn't have reconstruction. Hopefully someone who has had it will come along soon.

In the meantime, the site that Steph has signposted you to has some good advice.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you are getting on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
