Mum’s bowel cancer - liver and lungs

Hi there,

I'm struggling with dealing with my mum's cancer diagnosis. We initially found out that she has bowel cancer - the nurse said it's very good that they've caught it early so we were feeling positive.
She then had a CT scan that confirmed there is a tumour in her bowel but they also found "areas of concern" in the liver and her lung.
She’s seeing the oncologist tomorrow at 9am to hear more details.

Does "areas of concern" mean that the cancer has spread? I'm in knots of anxiety and so scared about what the future holds. I love my mum so much and can't imagine life without her. She has just turned 69.

Any advice or thoughts would be so appreciated. I just don't know what to do accept try to stay positive but also don't want to be naive about how serious this is.

  • Hello Jess and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

Coping with a cancer diagnosis can be very tough for all involved but it's good to hear that it's been caught early.

It's completely understandable, and natural, to be worried about the 'areas of concern' that have been found on your mum's liver and lung but I hope her appointment with the oncologist went well and they were able to give her some good news.

Hopefully you'll receive some support and advice from our members soon but if you or your mum would like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses at any point, you're welcome to get in touch with them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,
