Possible throat cancer

Hi

I have been reffered to ENT specialist to check for cancer and i am hoping someone could give me an idea of what sort of questions i need to make sure i ask? or ask them to look at? I dont want them to miss anything.

My symptoms started about 6 months ago with ear ache on one side that came and went. Then i started to get a sore throat that came and went around 4 months ago. It came back more and more often until it is now here permanently over the last month and a half. I have had times of flu feeling that have now gone after a few days which included temperture. When my throat is not really sore it feels numbs and swollen inside with the feeling that something its tight but the redness at the back never goes away. Perhaps something slightly blocking it lower down i cant see.  That makes it hard to sleep at night as it feels so tight and odd especially when i lay down. My left tonsil, on the side of the ear ache, is slightly bigger and angrier looking than the right. Under the tonsils and towards back of the tongue the tongue has very white patches. I can feel really fatigued. In the past week ive lost my voice which started to come back but is stuck at very hoarse and doesnt seem to be improving. I have a really dry cough that isnt clearing anything just feels tickly. When i do cough there is no blood but i do get metalic taste. Several different rounds of antibiotics have had no effect. My lymph nodes are defintely swollen in my neck.

One Dr has looked in recently and says I have cryptic tonsils could very well be causing me to feel ill and have all these symptoms but i dont believe it. They also  want the ENT to have a look further in the throat to be sure. I am really worried that this is something worse, especially with the lump feeling in my throat and the recent hoarseness of my voice.

What do you all think? does it sound like cancer symptoms? what should i make sure i ask to ensure things dont get missed

  • Hi Mike1112,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the difficulties you've been having recently.

Unfortunately we can't advise on what the issue is likely to be as it's only the specialist / medical team who can do this, so hopefully it's not long to wait for the appointment and any results that follow.

I don't think you need to worry about them missing things as they are the specialists and very used to doing what they need to do to be able to diagnose. However if you have any particular additional questions or concerns, I would suggest making a note of these and talking them through at your appointment.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
