Herceptin injection

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone else is undergoing treatment with just the Herceptin injection for 9 months following chemo? I'm due to start tomorrow for every 3 weeks until Jan 2022. Finished chemo in March( the last 4 cycles involved Herceptin iv but being on Docetaxel and Perjeta as well can't say what side effects Herceptin was giving from all of them). I've read the leaflet they give you initially when I signed the chemo consent and it's a whole list of side effects, one of the most terrifying that I've already been through: neutropenia, mouth ulcers, fever, hair loss, chest pains, nose bleeds... I was just hoping that the injection alone wouldn't repeat it all again, how would I cope for another 9 months?? Does the injection hurt when given in the thigh?

  • Hello Victoria87

We've quite a few women here on the forum who have had Herceptin as part of their treatment regime. I'm unsure if any have had Herceptin alone but hopefully, some of those who do have experience will post to share their thoughts and advice with you soon.

You might find it helpful to use the forum search function to look for the term "Herceptin" and read through some of the posts. It may be that you're able to connect with others this way as well.

If you'd like to talk through your concerns with one of our team of nurses you're welcome to give them a call. They will be back in the office on Tuesday on 0808 800 4040 (Usual hours Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm).

    Best wishes,

  • Hi im due to start the phesgo injection how have you found it what are the side effects

  • Hi,

I'm only on Herceptin injection, 22 in total- one subcutaneously in my thighs- every 3 weeks, 5 injections left for me  to do . I've read Phesgo is a combination of Perjeta Herceptin & Hyalorunidase which is like 3 in 1 or 2 in 1, not sure about what the Hyalorunidase does you'll have to get more info from your oncologists team.

I've received Perjeta & Herceptin intravenously during my last 4 cycles of chemo together with Docetaxel, finished all, then mastectomy and then started the 22 injections of Herceptin only which I'll be finishing in January

Side effects which I can say I've experienced would be hot sweats especially first few nights after having the injection, tingling sensation like pins& needles both feet and I get an echocardiogram every 3 months because Herceptin long run can affect your heart. So far God help me I've been ok ️

When I had it intravenously together with Perjeta I had a runny nose all the time but that might have been the Docetaxel also or just simply because I had it intravenously which doesn't compare with subcutaneously. And of course I'm dealing with early menopause and all of its side effects, low estrogen levels but that's mainly because of chemo not sure if injections have anything do to with it. It's been 7 months since last chemo session and still didn't get my period back and it stopped anyway after my first 2 cycles of chemo. They say if a full year has passed since last period than consider it menopause- well November last year was my one I'm only 34 and got diagnosed at 33 so maybe age will play a difference? Will just have to wait and see

Wish you success with your injections and hope you won't get any of the symptoms mentioned above but do get proper information from your medical team or even ask for the leaflet of the drug. You've got this

  • Hi

Glad to hear your doing well .I suffered really bad with chemo and frightened by taking the injection all the symptoms will come I was hoping to go back to work but there was no way I could work through the  chemo was hoping the injection alone wouldn't be too bad.i wish you well

  • I worked from home during chemo but since starting the injections I returned with no problems. I have my injection on a Friday after work and the weekend off but so far I've coped really well and you will too it's nothing comparing chemo
