Post breast surgery having issues with my hand. Anyone else?

Hi, I had a lumpectomy on 24th February and my lymph nodes removed on 24th March.

I woke up after the lymph node surgery  on my right side unable to feel my right hand.

after a day or so it felt like pins and needles, like I had been sat on my hand.

The pain is still as bad a month after, especially in my index finger, anyone else suffered this?

  • Hello LShelly

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having some issues following on from your recent surgeries.

I'm unsure if we've any members here who have had similar issues but I'd certainly recommend you speaking to your breast care nurse who will be able to arrange for you to be seen again in clinic or refer you to see the Physio if appropriate.

Hopefully, it is just a matter of time for everything to settle down after having had the two surgeries.

If you'd like to chat with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm).

    Best wishes,

  • Hi LShelly

Yes I have had a similar problem. Mine did not start until just before radiotherapy.  During radiotherapy it became excrutiatingly painful and I was prescribed strong painkillers.  I still have pins and needles in my fingers but mostly my index finger which was numb for a long time. Radiotherapy was 5 months ago. During the painful period I reduced my exercises to one stretch once a day and elevated my hand/arm (the pain went to my elbow) and it took about 6 weeks to calm down.  The pain has been building again recently - I am still trying to find a comfortable level of activity.  My team are resistant to the idea that surgery caused the pain.
