Swollen lymph node-- DO NOT STRESS

I had one swollen lymph node on the left side of my neck for around 3 months with no other symptoms. I was constantly prodding it and could not stop thinking about the chances of it being a lymphoma. I read every single post on this page, visited numerous doctors for blood tests, did statistical calculations on my chances of being diagnosed for my age in the UK --I was absoutley convinced I was carrying cancer.

2 months later, my lymph node returned to normal and I have not had any issues 1 year on. I think my swollen lymph node was caused by allergies and a lack of sleep, but who knows and who cares!!! Looking back now, I can't beleive how stressed I was and immeaditely fearing the worst, but I promised myself that I would share my story on this page for the comfort of others in the same position.

This post is not to say do not visit your doctor, but to encourage you to get off google and leave mecical diagnosis to medical professionals. You can search for anything on the internet and find it-- google purple apples and i'm sure they will come up. As humans we have a tendancy to fear the worst! Easier said than done, but close your tabs, stop worrying and follow medical guidelines.

The stress 99.9999999% of the times is for absoutely nothing.

Best of luck to all of you!

  • Hello CP2122,

Thank you very much for sharing your story and I am glad it all turned out to be nothing to worry about. Some excellent advice here and you are totally right. Googling symptoms only serves one purpose: to make us super anxious and imagine the worst so it is good to stay well away from Dr Google if we can!

    Keep well  and best wishes,

  • Thank you so much for sharing your story!! I have a swollen lymph node in my neck and it's been there for 4 nearly 5 weeks and my anxiety is unbearable! I've gone to doctors and will be having blood tests but I had convinced myself I had cancer and been having multiple panick attacks a day! You have no idea the relieve your post has given me!

  • Thank you so much for sharing your story. I have had a swollen lymph node on the left side of my neck since December, just over 3 months, I had an appointment today at ENT clinic and a camera had a good look around the inside of my throat. I was so happy when the consultant told me it was a healthy throat and thyroid and was amazed when he said it can be caused by stress. For the record I have been under extreme stress since December, exactly when it started. I now need to boost my immune system and stop worrying.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this. I've also been to my ENT consultant for a check and an ultrasound as well. Told not to worry but I've struggled at times with what I've read in the Dr Google archives . Anyway your post has really helped because I've been going through a lot of stress myself since Christmas when our baby boy was very poorly. Glad to hear that you are well.

    All the best.

  • I needed to see this tonight. Currently waiting for an mri after an urgent referral. My ultrasound says 2 suggestive reactive enlarged lymph nodes but they are very big (2cm) and I haven't been poorly. It's a very long and scary wait .

  • Thank you for posting this! Really needed to read this!! Google is the worst for anything. The min you type in swollen glands, cancer just comes up!

Ive only just noticed my 2 swollen behin my ear, they are on the Mastoid Bone so 1 min can feel hard the next squishy.. I think the bone straight behind them makes me think its hard but i think its the bone i feel! Im hoping its caused by allergies. Don't really have any other symptoms!

  • Hi CP2122

Thanks so much for this, I really needed it. I've had a small hard lump in my neck for a few weeks now. I must touch it about 100 times a day as i'm so worried about it. I know it's probably nothing but you can't help but get anxious. Googling it definitely hasn't helped as cancer comes up straight away - argh!

Glad to know i'm not the only one who feels this way and I will definitely keep away from self diagnosing and thinking the worst! thanks so much

  • Thank you so much for sharing this.

i have been under a lot of stress/anxiety over the past couple of months and have got a lump in the right side of my neck, my dr has told me it's a swollen lymph node, I've had blood tests taken and all came back ok.

im booked in for an urgent ultra sound but can take up to 6-8 weeks which has really affected my mental health.

Same as you, I've convinced myself that I've got lymphoma, been googling non stop and same as you, I've been poking and prodding the lump numerous times a day.

im hoping I have the same outcome as you, but really really happy to read something positive for a change, you have made my day and make me relax so much more.

I wasn't sure whether lymph nodes could swell due to anxiety and stress but you've just clarified it for me and for that I'm grateful!

    thank you!!

  • Hi, Sorry to respond to an old post but I have two swollen lymph nodes behind my ear with no symptoms like you and I'm worried. How did things pan out for you?
