Endometrial cancer

Hi.  I'm new to the forum and would be grateful for any advice.  I'm 61 and have been postmenopausal for 14 yrs.  I was referred for an ultrasound for lower abdominal pain in December 2020 which found endometrial thickness of 10mm.  I have not had any bleeding.  I have had two hysteroscopies since then, one under general anaesthetic.  Both failed because of a scarred cervix which caused a false passage to be made leading to perforation of my uterus.  Consequently no biopsies were taken.  I am currently waiting for the results of an mri scan and was told that I may need a hysterectomy.  I am concerned because I understood that only a biopsy could diagnose cancer and I'm nervous that the operation would be performed 'just in case'.

I know I should wait for the results of the scan, but there's been so much waiting and I'm still in pain and it's making me very anxious.  I've found all the posts very informative, but have not come across anyone in my situation.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

  • Hi Cobweb,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the situation you're in and I can certainly understand your concerns. I would encourage you to discuss these concerns around the necessity of the hysterectomy with your doctor/specialist when you can, as they will be best placed to advise. As you say, I'm sure you'll get the opportunity to do this once you get the results of the scan.

If you feel you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses at all, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

I hope you're able to find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

  •  Hi Ben

Thank you for your kind words.  I did speak to one of your nurses who was much more understanding and helpful than my doctor.  I'm very glad I came across this forum because it is reassuring to know that so many other people are in the same boat, waiting anxiously for results with very little information.

    Regards.

  • Hi I am in exactly the same position, can I ask what the outcome was? I have a large polyp, hysteroscopy abandoned die to stenosed cervix. Waiting on follow up mri. MRI showed nothing sinister except they can’t tell for sure if polyp is benign or not. Options another mri in 3 months or hysterectomy… I’ve had breast cancer and would rather not go through more surgery. Do let me know. X

  • Hi Jen, I just saw your post and noticed you were hoping to hear back from Cobweb.

Unfortunately as this discussion is over 4 years old, there's a chance you may not get a reply.

I'll have my fingers crossed that won't be the case but if you don't receive a response, it may be worth starting your own discussion about this as it will allow our more regular members, some of which may be in a similar position, to see your post and connect with you.

    Kind regards,
