Hey Anna,
I noticed you're going to be starting your chemo soon so I just wanted to wish you good luck and share some information we have on our website about picc lines.
I hope this proves useful but if you'd like to have a chat about this with one of our cancer nurses they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.
Hopefully some of our members will be along soon to share their experiences with you.
All the best,
Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
Hi,
PICC lines.
My husband has just finished treatment for Oesophageal cancer. He has 2 Lot of PICC lines, one for the pre op and another for the post op chemo.
He is , or was one of the most squeamish person I know and he said 'oh it was fine', and if he says that it really must have been! He almost kinda forgot about it.
No troubles with it, nurses see to it every week.
Ask away.
Pretty cool piece of kit really.
best wishes
hilts

Hi Anna , your just starting out on your trestmenrs journey and I wish you well .
You asked about a pic line ,Well a lot of people having chemotherapy do have to have them I did to. Its usually inserted, as t some people here veins that can't cope with having candulers put in each time they have thier chemotherapy sessions.
It's inserted by a fully trained qualified individual, so you will be in safe hands when its being done.
You have a kinda ultrasound during the procedure, which is used to find a good vein.
It's doesn't take long , and it's uncomfortable lying there as you need to stay still, but not that painfull .
Once in it's done ,and you start your trestments the chemotherapy drugs can go into the pic line, so there is no need for a candular to be put in each week when you have chemotherapy, which in itself is great.
If your worried about how you wash, shower etc, don't worry as they give you a plastic sleeve which has elastic cuffs each end ,which you slide on your wrist and pull it up, over your pic line, so it's covered, so you can take a shower etc. You will be fine, well looked after. Good luck with everything, and im always here if you want to talk about anything, as i do pop on here from time to time .x
Had mine a few years ago now but honestly it was a great thing to have and made life so much easier. The insertion was quick and painless as was the removal once I'd finished chemo.good luck with your treatment
