Colonoscopy Pain

I had my first colonoscopy today, it wasn't even a the full one. It was a flexible sigmoidoscopy so only part of the way up. I had no expectations as everything I read and was told was that it was just uncomfortable but not painful. Nonetheless I took the sedation as I was very nervous. The pain was excruciating!!!!! I was screaming with sedation and they gave me gas & air which did nothing. I had to ask them to stop but they encouraged me to keep going with it. So I tried a little longer. The managed to get most of it complete apart from the later area where I just had to say "this is my absolute point of pain threshold, please I can't take anymore". The sedation did nothing and neither did the gas and air. I felt like a complete looser having read and being told this shouldn't hurt. I have a huge pain tolerance so I'm baffled why this happened and why I wasn't able to do this. From reading here some people with fibro can be super sensitive to the pain and I just recently had a fibro diagnosis... however I have a good pain tolerance! But this was off the scale. I've never had to say stop in any procedure before. I also read that sometimes patients with Diverticulitis can experience extreme colonoscopy pain. This was something my Gastro consultant had said I may have. Can anyone else tell me if they found this as awful as me?
im wondering what happens now if they cannot complete the colonoscopy and only viewed part of the colon. I would hate to have to go through this again!

  • Hello Les82

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had a poor experience with a colonoscopy.

Many people successfully have the procedure but we do know that lots of people also find it difficult. You might find it helpful to have a look at this thread where others have shared their experiences. Hopefully, it will offer you some support ahead of your next appointment with the Consultant.

    Best wishes,
