Worried

On Friday I woke to find what seemed like a large hard lump on my right side just by my arm pit. I felt sick with worry. After getting through to the doctors surgery they told me a doctor would call me later that afternoon. When she did she asked me lots of questions and in the end told me she didn't think it was anything sinister and not to worry. She then told me to come in on Monday so she could take a look. I went Monday and she thinks it's a cyst. She has referred me to have a mammogram. Today I received the letter which says an urgent referral has been made. I was wondering if anyone else received a letter that said it was urgent? I am so tearful and worried. I just try and keep myself busy. I think I was ok until today as the letter has really scared me. Has anyone else felt the same?

  • Hi

I can't relate to your lump or letter. But I can certainly relate to your worry, I'm now in chemo after being diagnosed with hodgkin lymphoma.

The worst part of all of it is the limbo and waiting for a diagnosis, but stay strong and don't be scared to persist with calling the specialists to push for answers.

I hope you get good news and it is nothing, be assured though if it is cancer, once you get your diagnosis things will move quickly and you'll feel in good hands.

I wish you all the best

  • I am in a similar position to you. I discovered a breast lump a week ago, which my GP examined and referred me into the breast clinic. All lumps that are referred by a Gp to breast clinic are done under the 2 week rule, as they are all classed as urgent. This is because the gp has no definitive way to know that it is definitely a cyst, so they treat all lumps the same.
so try not to worry that the letter says urgent, as it is standard practice for all breast lumps, even ones that the Gp suspects is a cyst.
good luck, let us know how you get on.
