Health Anxiety

Hi I'm a teenager who has always been at a good health my whole live but since we have been in lockdown in scotland I've been constantly worrying about health scares mostly cancer. I am searching up a lot of the symptoms on the internet. I every time I have mild headaches that have happened for a few days I will get worried about a tumor I am unsure what to do. Even the slightest pain that happens in a specific part in my body I will get concerned then I will eventually mistake it for something else then stop worrying. Im just wanting opinions from everyone on what to do. Thanks

  • Well, this is an opinion from a cancer sufferer. See a doctor for your health anxiety, stop using dr google and stop looking at cancer forums when there is no reason to do so. I’m sad that a teenager should even be thinking of posting in a cancer forum. Do you have any idea at all what the rest of us would give to have good health? We are here be because we actually have cancer. I’m sure that’s not what you want to hear, but seriously?

  • Hi,  I think perhaps your health anxiety has been magnified by COVID as you're no doubt isolated and bored like the rest of us!  If you have serious health or anxiety concerns which don't go away after a little while you should certainly visit your doctor as teenagers do get ill and get cancer too, although it is rare.  Perhaps try to concentrate more on living a healthy life as this will reduce your chances of becoming ill and improve your mood generally.  Eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise, cut down on alcohol (not sure if you're old enough to drink anyway) and don't smoke, try to have a good amount of screen free time in your day.  Now that we are coming out of lockdown, try to see your friends (within the rules in Scotland) and start to get back to a normal teenage life.  The internet is a great tool for general information but it can make health anxiety worse!

I can't imagine how difficult it is to be a teenager in these strange times, but not getting outside in the daylight enough can also increase anxiety, put your headphones on and get out every day, even if you just walk round the street or a nearby park.  I hope things improve for you.

    Hi N3w0456,

A very warm welcome to our forum. Many young people have found that their health anxiety has increased since the start of the current pandemic,  Both Minska and Ali have given you some good advice. We always advise people to stay away from the internet, as you will come away feeling that you are dying with just a minor scratch.

Headaches can be due to much less serious diseases than cancer and can be a problem in your teens, as your hormones are continually changing. Have you discussd your feelings with your family? Being able to voice your concerns can lead to the old adage of "A problem shared is a problem halved." It is also worth discussing your worries with your GP, who can refer you for counselling to help with this.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
