Left side cramping pain and brown spotting after run?

A month ago I started to experience a sharp cramping pain in my left lower side. I frequently went to the bathroom to pee and I was very bloated. I went to the pharmacist and they said it might be a UTI and gave me some antibiotics for 3 days. I then phoned my GP to let him know about my symptoms and the antibiotics and he was happy with everything.

My body reacted badly to the antibiotics. I was tired, weak and lost my appetite. I also couldn't digest carbs anymore which was weird. I would eat a small amount of food before getting very full. I felt like I had so much gas building up on my left side. Also, my period was 5 weeks late. I called my GP after the three days to tell him I had no improvement and the new symptoms. He asked me to come in and he did a cervix exam and took some blood tests.

A few days later he said everything appeared fine, but he gave me some antibiotics to help with the gas and bloating. Again my body did not react well to those antibiotics, so I stopped taking them. My symptoms seemed to get better when I excluded carbs from my diet. So I excluded gluten from my diet for a week and I felt normal again. My period also came and everything seemed fine. I got a slight tingle running from my hip to my upper left thigh every day but I didn't think much of it.

Today I went for a run and I felt a sharp pain on my left side and I ignored it. I could smell blood (similar to the smell of your period), and I ignored it since I had my period 2 weeks ago.  When I got home I had brownish-red liquid coming from my private area. The left side cramping pain is back and my left hip to upper thigh is tingling much more.

I'm only 23, so I'm not eligible to get a smear test done until 25. I'm really worried because I feel like something is wrong and I keep getting told it's either stress or my hormones. Any advice?

  • Hello Nomsss

I'm sorry to hear about the health concerns that you've been dealing with recently and the incident earlier this week.

I certainly think it's worth going back to your GP to let them know about this pain and unexpected bleed. It may be that they want to do further tests or refer you to a specialist.

I hope that you have some answers soon and that things improve for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Keep pushing for a smear test. Bombard your doc if you have to. You know your body - and if you feel some thing is wrong don't allow them to dismiss you.

it's probably nothing but your peace of mind is worth fighting for xx

  • Hi Mallow

A smear test is to check for abnormal cells-it is not the appropriate course of action for someone with the symptoms described.

Jenn is correct-seeing the GP and having the symptoms investigated is the right thing to do.
