How soon?

My GP physically examined my stomach today, she said "I wasn't expecting to see what I have seen today and I am marking requirement for scan as urgent, I need blood samples from you asap, make appointment with nurse when you leave this office".

My liver function failed two blood tests between July and October.  GP requested a scan as a recommendation.  It's now end of March, I was at GP today as I wrote an email to the GP and hospital complaining about wait time and my wretching and my decline in health.

Do you think I will get a scan fast now?  Does urgent mean urgent now?

  • Hello Grace001,

Only just seen your post from last night. Waiting times do vary due to recent demands on health services, but you should always chase this up with your doctor if the wait has been particulary long. I'm sure you'll get an appointment soon. You can read more about urgent referrals in general here, which I hope will be useful to you.

    Best wishes,

    Moderator Anastasia

  • I know only moderator as replied. Why isn't anyone talking to each other.

Urgent referral you should be seen within 2 weeks, thats what I'm waiting for too.Im not expecting a good out come as been ill awhile, and things are turning for the worse. Hope you get sorted. Mike

  • Hey,

Sorry to hear about your situation, our health is everything and can at times become a massive worry and also at times like that we need the support and advice of others, I totally understand that.

From my experience of being on here, I wrote a post which took a while to get a reply to, one of the moderators responded, when you get that reply it bumps your post to the top of the list again, it's literally waiting for the right person who can answer your question to read your post and reply. You can also bump your own post to the top by replying to your own post until someone who can answer your question sees it.

Ok so back to your post, not sure if you'll see my reply or not but I'll respond anyway in the hope that I can help in some way

So I've noticed that there's 2 different types of urgent, one being the 2 week one for suspected cancer and the other being a general urgent one. What I'd suggest for you to do would be to call the Drs surgery and ask the receptionist if your Dr has requested your scan on the 2 week urgent referral route or just as urgent.. once you've found this out, call the hospital where you'd be having the scan and ask to be put through to ultrasound appointments.. from there you can find out if they have an appointment for you.. and if you feel it's a little too far in the future you can always ask about cancellations.. I'm saying all of this because I had the same thing with an urgent referral for a scan and I wanted to find out how long I'd be waiting, I also managed to bring my scan forward by just over a week due to a cancellation... so mine is now on Friday.

I'm not sure if it's the same across the country, I'm just going by my experience, I live in Surrey.

Good luck with everything and I hope all turns out well for you x

  • I'm sorry to hear your liver tests were not good and it's not clear when you'll have your scan. I was told by my GP to go to A&E for urgent tests and they did some, but failed to recognise a serious health issue and recommend that I wait for the scan to happen. My health then deteriorated and I had jaundice and I had to go to A&E second time after about 2 weeks and that's when they actually kept me in and did the scans really quickly. ( I was then diagnosed with a bile duct cancer) I think it really depends on your other symptoms and general health. If you are really unwell and have lots of really worrying symptoms, for example jaundice or weight loss, I'd go to A&E.
