Dermoid Cyst

Hi i was diagnosed with a large (10cm)  dermoid ovarian cyst in November 2020 and after diagnostics it was ascertained by my consultant that it is unlikely to be cancer and have been p!aced on a waiting list for surgery for possibly a year or much longer as waiting lists are very long due to covid 19 I am not deemed as urgent case.  Apart from the discomfort the cyst can cause the more worrying aspect is the knowledge that there is tbe possibility of the cyst containing cancer cells which will only be known once removed and biopsed so the sooner this is out the better.  Meanwhile i have had to literally beg my GP practice for a monitoring scan who reluctantly ordered for me recently.   I have read that these cysts need to be monitored regularly to look for changes etc.   I am 51 and am going through perimenopause.  Its a worrying time.

  • Hello Lucy-Lou,

A warm welcome to our forum. That's a large cyst indeed but it is reassuring that the consultant said it was unlikely to be cancer. It is indeed a worrying time and covid19 does make everything so much more complicated at the moment causing delays and disruptions. I can understand why, even though the consultant was adamant that cancer is highly unlikely, you would want it removed and biopsied as soon as possible.

You did really well to ask your GP for a monitoring scan - this way your cyst will be monitored on a regular basis and any changes can be addressed quickly.

I really hope they will catch up with the backlog of surgeries soon and that you won't need to wait too long to be seen.

    Best wishes,
