Getting tested

Hi everyone

I could really do with some advice. My mum has been diagnosed with grade 3 triple negative breast cancer that has metastasized to her lymph nodes. She has had a single masactomy and will be going through radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Today I received a letter from my godmother who used to be a nurse and a university nursing professor and she is urging me to contact my gp to request a mammogram and saying it's really important I do this. She has totally terrified me as no one has mentioned anything like this to me or my sister. We are both in our early 30s and after reading online about it I'm not sure we need to have this done. MY mum is the only family we have who has had breast cancer. My paternal grandfather passed away of cancer (not sure what type) so does this mean I have a family history of cancer?

  • Hello Penguin25

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's recent diagnosis. I hope that she is recovering well from her surgery and that the rest of her treatment plan goes smoothly.

It's worth speaking to your GP about your Mum's diagnosis although it may be that you're not eligible for early breast screening if there is no other family history of cancer. Either way, your GP will be able to talk things through with you and offer some reassurance.

Alternatively, I'd encourage you to give our team of nurses a call on 0808 800 4040. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and I'm sure that they would be happy to explain things to you and give you some reassurance about the situation.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you so much for replying it's made me and sister feel much better. It's been very difficult with my mum as she has bipolar too and is currently in a mental health unit and to be honest we haven't received much support from anyone. X

  • Ah Penguin25 I am sorry to hear this. It must be incredibly difficult for you all.

Please do give our nurses a call on the number above. I'm sure they will be able to give you some reassurance and support.

Keep in touch and let us know how things go.

    Best wishes,
