Chest & upper back pain after lumpectomy

Dear forum users, l'm not sure what's normal after a lumpectomy. It's now 4 weeks after. At first l seemed to heal quite quickly and l'd taken 2 weeks off work. I felt more than ready to return. However, 2 weeks after working at a desk based job with long hours, (catching up) the pain in my chest wall and upper back is so intense it keeps me a awake at night and is a constant nagging feeling. ( feels bruised on the breast bone but much deeper & the back pain muscle in the lower shoulder blades) My lump was quite deep in the inner breast bone area. I suspect this is quite normal and maybe l have pushed myself too hard at work & home, but l now feel embarrassed to ask for more time off work for healing. I've also gone back on pain killers to help. I also get stabbing pains in the breast occasionally- which l know will be nerves healing, but that's nothing compared to the constant dull ache and tightness in my chest and back. What's normal? Thank you.

  • Hi LincolnLady1,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can see you've also posted in the 'Ask the nurses' section of this forum, so you'll receive a reply from one of our nurses shortly and hopefully this will help.

I hope that things ease soon for you, and if anyone else here has similar experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,
