Spreading of jaw lumps.

Hi, I suppose I'm looking for information if anyone can help me, maybe a bit of reassurance too?

My Mum is 64 years old in poor health. copd, Chronic regional pain syndrome, Collapsing spine, poor hearing (sometimes selective) bipolar.

She takes two types of morphine, paracetamol, serialise and two others im unsure of names.

She is a long term smoker, used to be between 20/30 a day now id say 10/15 a day. (I have tried to get her to stop) she doesn't drink, she hardly leaves the house is always very tired.  Her memory is getting increasingly worse. She has many chest infections, often on steroids and antibiotics. Lots of breathing related medication. Although she's always had mad moods due to bipolar she sometimes gets quite nasty, thats really not like her. Even with the grandchildren. She is in pain all the time, she can hardly walk. She has occasional blackouts and often has difficulty eating and swallowing she's been hospitalised for this many times over the years but definitely worse now. She has non healing sores on her head.

I'm aware that some of these are symptoms of many things including age and medication affects.

She has recently been to the Dr about some lumps on her jawline. She has been for mri and baring swallow and all she's said is that they've said 'its' spread and they've done a biopsy. Mum has told me that they didn't tell her what it is but are looking into treatment. She could be not telling me to save worry but I know that as she doesn't go out she gets panicky and will leave without getting all the information or if she doesn't hear them she won't ask again as she gets embarrassed. I wasn't allowed with her because of covid.

Has anyone had any experience with some of this? I appreciate there is a lot of information but she's been poorly for so long I've long suspected that there is something there. (I have spoken to Dr and hospital as well as encouraged her to ask for tests)

Thank you for reading any information is appreciated

  • Hello Jojo9babies

I'm sorry to hear about all the ongoing health problems that your Mum is living with and that these lumps have raised some concerns.

It sounds as if it's quite a difficult situation for you and that there is some information missing from the overall picture. Whether that is because your Mum doesn't know, doesn't understand, or chooses not to share that is difficult to say. It could be that at this point the Consultants are unsure of the exact diagnosis and are unable to give your Mum any firm information until the biopsy results are back.

If you're unable to physically attend the next appointment with your Mum then I wonder if she may be able to call you whilst she is in the appointment so that you can hear what is being said. It would also give you an opportunity to ask some questions.

Alternatively, you could speak to the hospital PALS department for some advice and guidance on the best way forward for being able to support Mum during her appointments.

If you'd like to have a chat with one of our nurses you're welcome to give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
