Normal smear, no HPV, but high grade lesion on colposcopy

Hi everyone,

Over the course of the last year I did the pap/smear test which was normal, as well as HPV test which was negative (no high or low risk types). However, on both occassions, my gynaecologist performed the colposcopy and saw quite a few areas colored white on my cervix when he applied the acetic solution. He told me that he suspects high grade, rather than low grade changes. Today I did 2 biopsies and waiting for the result. I am really surprised how I could have normal smear and negative HPV result on both occasions over the last year, yet there was quite a big area on my cervix areas colored white and looking suspicious.

I am very nervous about this and I was wondering whether anybody has also had normal smear and negative HPV test and still got diagnosed with CIN2 or CIN3 (i.e. high grade lesions)?

Thank you so much

I'm sorry to hear that your recent appointment raised some concerns with the Consultant. It's understandable that you may be feeling anxious about things and I do hope that you don't have to wait too long for the biopsy results. Did the hospital give you an idea about when you may hear something?

Sometimes it can help to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you might find it useful to have a chat with one of our nurses? I'm sure they will be able to offer some advice and support.
If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
