Breast cysts & smoker

Hi. My best friend has breast cysts, she has had a mammogram. She is 46. She has been a heavy smoker for 30 years. She said she was told by the doctor that they wouldn't drain or remove the cysts until she was 6 months off cigarettes as they would just come back. This was prob 2 years ago. She has not stopped smoking. Is this correct info? I'm worried the cysts may become cancerous as she hasn't followed up with further appointments. Thanks
