Has anyone had similar symptoms?

I have been having some issues with my tongue since the start of the year. It started of quite painful down the left side of my tongue, I visited the doctor followed by the dentist who said nothing was wrong(apart from gingivitis). I went away and my symptoms started to fade away but were still there. I have since been to the dentist twice and my GP who have no concerns about my tongue as I was worried I may have tongue cancer. What I'm more worried about is I still have these odd sensations down the left side of my tongue, like a dry feeling but on on the side, sometimes a tingly feeling. This is nowhere near as bad as it was when it all first started, I wake up most mornings it isn't there but by the evening it's stronger than the whole day. The doctor basically told me to live with it! What on earth could it be? I'm getting frustrated and I feel like I can't go back to the dentist or doctor as they are just going to think I'm crazy! When I saw my dentist last week she was adamant nothing was wrong and she saw no signs of cancer. I felt good but I think my anxiety is playing up again and I can't shift the bad feeling there's something wrong. Sorry for the long post I just don't know what else to do! X

  • Oh also salt and warm water to rinse in mouth 3 times a day.
Hoping it gets better day by day!  I think my hubby is ready for the hills with me  Xx

  • Seriously although it's not nice, it's nice to know I'm not alone with these bizarre symptoms. Sounds exactly like me. My tongue feels dry at the moment but it only the left side towards the back. Oh how strange listerine must be way too strong!

img the big round ones.... Iv never noticed mine before but I mentioned it to the dentist and she wasn't concerned either. Same as the flappy papillae down the sides of my tongue, one side is more prominent than the other but again no concerns. It makes me wonder wether this lump sensation I keep getting is the big taste buds I'm in the back of my tongue but why can I only feel it on the left side not the right even though they are both the same size! Maybe I'm too focused or maybe my tongue is swollen on the left, oh that gives me more anxiety..

I will have a look for both to see which one helps me out.

have you been having nystatin? Hopefully if it doesn't work the stronger stuff will! I feel I need to speak to a doctor yet again!

I hope you manage to get a doctors appointment tomorrow!

im half tempted to call 111, my neck feels swollen like a full sensation but doesn't feel swollen to touch if that makes sense. My throat is so painful, Iv tried soothers, lemsip and strepsils. The thought of gargling salt water makes me throw up in my head. I'm just in so much pain, if I call the doctors again in the morning I feel like the receptionist is going to be like urgh! Her again! That's how many times I call the flippin place!

thankyou, I hope Wednesday goes well too and I will be sure to ask for anything if I don't get much help before then! Or nothing gets better xx

  • Yes totally just the left side for me too with the throat pain and tongue although the larger tonsil i was worried about is at the other side!! Weird.

thats the Med I have been on twice and hasn't made a difference at all. So I'm going to request this other stuff the ENT said.

I am very persistent and lay it out to the dr each time and I even thought at the time with the ENT was looking at me as if I was nuts! He just kept saying this is all either allergies, thrush or sinus related I used to suffer a lot with my sinuses.

I feel bit defeated like u with it all but I'm at the stage now where I won't stop till it's sorted.

I feel the same and I know we have only talked a little I'm thankful I can come on and chat so thank you xx

  • Sorry meant to say yes the large ones at the back that go into like a v shape if that makes sense! Driving me nuts

  • Morning!

I could have written that myself. I was originally concerned about my right tonsil too! How weird is that! And now all my pain is left side only. Something doesn't add up here.

oh that's not good. Yes do so, and hopefully that one will be strong enough to help you.

I need to be more firm, I am a little bit soft and a bit of a pushover, and then feel disheartened when something hasn't been resolved.

when I wake up in the morning, I can't work out where these sensations are coming from, the tip of my tongue but towards the left side not directly in the centre, the back of my tongue at the left side, or the back of my tongue left side on the top. It's like a tingling burning fuzzy sensation that's the only way I can describe it. Iv tried to tell myself allergies, vitamin deficiency, thrush, burning mouth syndrome and then I get to cancer and it's like yep that's got to be it! Why? Why do we always have to assume the worst when there's so many more reason. My throat isn't as sore this morning, but we will see if it gets worse over the course of the day. Hopefully not.

yes them ones I think they are called circumvallate papillae. Google told me haha.

I agree talking to someone who doesn't think I am going mad is really helping, and if you ever need to chat just please come on here and find me.

hope you have a good night sleep too xx

  • Hi Iona-123

    how are you?

this morning I have woken up feeling very deflated, can't shift the fear I have tongue cancer. I am just getting so frustrated with not having a diagnosis of anything and still living with this sensations 9 weeks on. I have just booked myself another GP appointment but with a complete different doctor, I just need to know what on earth is going on!

  • Hi!
so sorry this is such a late reply! I'm so sorry u have been feeling like this how are you now?

its been a busy couple of weeks for me and have been kept busy. I got a further tongue swap and it showed nothing so was given a tablet to see if it would lift the white on tongue and did did help a lot with the whiteness. I got blood tests taken and it came back with high Iron so I'm in a right state so was back today for further blood tests.

i still have that dry awful feeling on tongue but for last two days I have cut out dairy and it seems to be helping slightly.
I don't know where else at this point to turn I've further drs call Monday morning. It's awful all this worrying xxx

  • Hi Iona,

sorry for the late reply. Honestly, mY mouth feels back to normal all bar a few niggles every so often, I think having 2 dentists look at me definitely reassured me and the anxiety was released.

sorry to hear you are still suffering. Glad the swab came back fine and the tablets for the white tongue are helping.

it's funny because sometimes when I have a yoghurt or tea it makes my tongue feel weird but honestly this last week and a bit I have felt rather normal... up until yesterday when I found a pea size lump near my nipple... my next worry.

    how are you feeling now?

I have accepted your friend request, message me whenever you want, I am always here for a chat, sometimes talking to somebody who is going through the same worries or been through the same can help bring the worries down xxx

  • Hi girls I hope ur ok , I'm currently feeling an irritating pain at the back of my tongue on the left side - I've been torturing myself examining my tongue and can see a bump on the left side and not the right - looks like folitatte papillae but why only one side? So worried

  • [@Flightglide]‍ welcome To the dreaded forum. I have to admit though there are some really lovely people out there with some great advice and support. I'm sorry to hear you are having some health concerns. I will give you my outcome, but I am not giving you a diagnosis. What you have just described is what I went to my doctor about twice and my dentist 3 times before I had a second opinion from a second dentist on my third visit there. We are NOT symmetrical. I have that "lump" in the left side of my tongue too. It is a normal pet of my anatomy. Believe it or not after that visit, 90% of my symptoms went. Anxiety plays a major part in symptoms, I know that now. But what I will say is I still get the odd feeling back there, but what I have realised is I bite the front side of my tongue and I have a feeling I am doing nerve damage to my tongue. Have you been to see a doctor or a dentist? Only they can tell you the matter is. I hope u are ok! X
