19 yr old son urgent referral to haematology

My son had a lump come up on his face near to his ear. 2 days later another lower down then another on his neck. Went to GP they did bloods and said he had a strep infection. Fast forward 2 weeks and the last lump on his neck is big, painful, affecting his jaw etc. GP has done urgent referral to haematology on Monday. My question is although he is 19 he is worried and needs his mum. Will I be able to go with him to the appointment?

  • Hello Jymjules,

You can certainly be around if he needs support, but it might be a good idea to contact the clinic in case there are restrictions due to the pandemic. I hope you will be able to. There is also some information on urgent referrals here. Nine out of ten people referred in this way are found not to have cancer.

    I hope this helps,

  • Hi

i drove him to the appointment and waited outside while he had bloods done. We then spent some time together before he went back in for his appointment. He handled it really well. They have told him that he needs further tests. Now waiting on an ultrasound. The doctor explained to him that she was a cancer doctor..... think it shocked him a little....... and that at this point in time she can't rule anything out hence the need for more tests
