Breast Lump and Axilla “thickening” - any advise welcome!!

Hi,

Im new to here. My GP suggested me to use this site to get support.
I'm 29 and mum to 3 little ones. There is considerable family history of breast cancer in my family so I've doing monthly checks pretty much since I was 15 (it so happened that due to external factors I hadn't checked since Sept 2020). Fast forward a few months and on 28th Dec, whilst checking, I found a hard lump. I waited 3 weeks to ensure it wasn't hormonal and that I wasn't coming down with anything. After all of this I booked in with my GP for a breast Exam ( Mon 25th Jan 2021)

GP knows me and knows I like things said straight- so she let me know everything as she found it:
I have a strange shaped lump in my left breast - upper outer area (GP said it didn't feel smooth). This is the one I knew about.
During the Breast exam she also noted an underarm lump- reporting it as an Axilla thickening on my urgent referral. I'm not going to lie, that made me give her a double take id noticed it back in August and September but hadn't thought to compare it to the other side to check how much thicker it was. It had gotten worse since Sept- and did worry me. GP couldn't stop saying how glad she was that I wasn't ignoring it.

I have received my appointment with the breast clinic for next Monday (1st Feb). And it's now a waiting game!

I am aware that there is a higher possibility of it being something and nothing, but I've watched many (8) of my direct family members have Breast Cancer (age range 24-32 yrs old at diagnosis) and am therefore aware that there could be a chance of unwelcome news.

I am also a worrier- not so much at the results, but more so that everything will somehow magically disappear before next Monday, and they will think I was being daft! Sounds silly, but I am not a fan of hospitals and drs (history of many procedures, ops and general pain!), so I try to avoid as much as possible.

Can anyone give me some advice as to what to expect at the breast clinic, or anything really

  • Hi lovely

I'm glad you are getting this checked out.

At the clinic they will do a full exam of both breasts and circle any lumps (I was like a dot to dot). Then you will probably have a mammogram and /or ultrasound. I say or because you might be too young for mammo. If they have lumps they are concerned about they will do a biopsy. They will also do an ultrasound of your underarms. Biopsies are okay, bit tender but okay.

You might be asked to wait while they look at your scans and then you will be called back in to see the consultant. You usually have to wait a fortnight for biopsy results so you will get another appointment.

At the follow up, if it is cancer, you meet your breast care nurse who is your liaison person, and you get an outline of the treatment plan.

Don't for a minute think you are being daft. 12 months ago I was awaiting to see the GP after doing the whole hormone wait for a period and its flu season so the NHS is busy route. And now despite surgery and chemo I am in month 6 of a 6-12 month prognosis. So my advice is stay calm, not every lumo is cancer, not every cancer is quite as aggressive and chemo resistant as mine, but for peace of mind get it checked.

I'll be thinking of you Monday, let me know how  you get on xxx

  • Hi [@Gistaline]‍ ‍

Thank you so much for your comment, it has given me some peace about tomorrow. I was worried they wouldn't scan my underarms, as I couldn't find anywhere that said they would scan that alongside the lump.

I'm so sorry to hear of your prognosis, how are you doing?
I hope you feel well in yourself- as much as possible. Did you know how serious it was from the beginning? Or did it change prognosis wise from later during treatment?

I am honestly so grateful for the message!

I will update this tomorrow following my appointment, fingers crossed all goes smoothly. Xxx
