Colon Polyps

Thanks for accepting me and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.  I really do appreciate it.

This past year Ive been experiencing severe pain in my right groin area which bores through to my lower back. The pain radiates down my leg and up into my shoulder and arm into my fingers.

My health this past year has not been good because I suffer with a complex thyroid issue and most of my symptoms Ive put down to that. However, in November I passed alot of blood through my back passage and my doctor referred me for an urgent colonoscopy which I underwent in December.

The hospital done an endoscopy and colonscopy together under twilight sedation. I have no recollection of the endoscopy but the colonscopy is quite vivid and it went on for over two hours. Apparently I hadn't completely evacuated my bowel and my ascending colon could not be examined but they found ten polyps in my colon which were removed,  on one they attached two clamps as it seemed to be bleeding alot. They took two biopsies of my rectum, two of my stomach and were going to biopsy the ten polyps. The doctor said that she would make an appointment to investigate the remainder of my bowel in 3 months time and will see me every 6 months thereafter.

Unfortunately I didn't get to speak with anyone after the colonscopy and I can't get through to the hospital. My GP received notification that the biopsies were taken and they mentioned histology. I haven't received any results yet and have been doing alot of research and I'm beyond worried at this point.

In the colonscopy I could see on the monitor the polys they found were flat and the pain has become more frequent and intense. Its similar to severe period cramping x10, I'm actually sitting on my bed here struggling to write this with a hot water bottle  on the area and I've taken so much pain medication  with zero effect.

The hospital have me on PPI medication and since then I've cut out all red meat, gluten, sweetners etc. out of my diet. Prior to this my diet was very good. Im fit but not as much as I would like because I suffer with extreme fatigue and dizziness. I have the worst brain fog too & I get extremely uncomfortably bloated. My bowel movements unaided are probably once every two weeks and I never feel like I completely empty my bowel. My GP has requested that the 2nd part of the colonscopy be escalated and is also going to organise a CT scan whilst I wait for the next appointment. I did ask the doctor when I was undergoing the colonscopy to see me sooner and she said that my bowel had been through enough and I had to rest it. Unfortunately I can't switch off my mind and with the pain I'm seriously worrying.

I would appreciate if someone can help or share their experiences with me as I am the first in my family to have bowel polyps and every story I read about them so far really gives me cause for concern.

Thanks

  • Hi

Sorry to hear you are going through all this, it must be very worrying for you.

I had bowel cancer diagnosed in 2014. This was found by having a colonoscopy.

I don't know your age but as we get older we can get polyps which sometimes over time can become cancerous.

I would press for your appointments to be as soon as possible, not because I think there's something bad, but because I can imagine the anxiety you are going through with needing answers to your symptoms.

You said you had done some research... don't search google... it will fill your head with the worse things ever.

On the positive, nothing bad screamed out at them during your test so try and focus on that.

I would say in normal times to turn up at A&E, as I did, you get all the tests, scans etc done at the same time. They kept me in and although cancer was the last thing I was expecting, it was found and within 2 weeks I had surgery. With covid things are different now.

I hope you get sorted soon, let me know how you get on.

  • Hi Ineedabreak,

I'm so sorry for the delay in responding but I've written 3 different posts to you and lost every single obe of them.... I'm copying this one as I go along.

First and foremost thank you for your response and the reassurance its really helped me. Im scared stiff and you have no idea how relieved I am to know that you managed to get through it. It awful how the mind can run riot and the worst case scenario is reached especially when we have all the research we need at our fingertips!

I hope you dont mind me asking but was it a large blockage you had from a polyp? Did you suffer with pain? Ive always had slow transit constipation but this past year has been horrendous. I've been getting dizzy spells whereby I completely lose my balance. I get regular bloodtests to monitor my condition and they are never consistent. I suffer badly with chronic fatigue and inflammation & my stomach gets so bloated and uncomfortable. Ive noticed that when I take laxatives to move my bowel the pain is unbearable for a number of days. The pain starts like a period cramp along my lower back and then settles on the right side at my groin through to my right buttock radiating down my right thigh and up to my collar bone and into my jaw, fingers. This pain wakes me when I'm sleeping and no amount of pain meds help. I've  since spoken to my GP who has organised another stronger pain killer so hopefully that will work.

I agree, that the colonscopy should be earlier and my doctor has written to the hospital to organise. My doctor has also organised a CT scan whilst I wait to do the colonscopy. I still haven't received the results of the biopsies (over a month ago) and I'm hoping that maybe its a good sign? I'm thinking that maybe if it was anything serious they would have urgently called me... Would I be right in saying that?

I'm a little overwhelmed with all I'm reading about the volume of bowel polyps and how this can be the more serious aspect. My apologies if I'm not coming across well, I'm just thinking too much lately.

Once again thank you and I sincerely hope you too are doing okay.

  • Hi

One thing I found at the beginning was that it felt like I had to push all of the time to get answers. It's ok them giving you stronger meds but I always want to know whats causing the symptoms. I would chase up the biopsy results too, they do leave you dangling everytime. Last time I had a CT I was going through hell waiting for the results and after 2 weeks and not being able to stand it any longer I rang my GP who is lovely and has gone through much of this with me, she checked on her comp and the results were on there saying everything was ok, it took another 2 weeks for the letter from the hospital to come.

I do think if they had found anything serious you would have heard by now.

I had a large polp which was cancerous, was never constipated but soft when I went and marroon coloured. Not horrendous pain but some.

Keep pushing your GP to quicken them up, I would stop reading up about stuff. We are all different and all have diffrent symptoms. My GP hates 'Dr Google'.

Keep in touch and I hope you get sorted soon. x

  • I agree and hope thats the case... I'm doing all I can especially given the pandemic but I do feel like I'm lost in all of this. I can only ever have consultations with my GP and sometimes not everything is discussed over the phone.

On my last set of bloodwork (2weeks)  my Gamma returnec high at 151... It should be a within range of 6-42 ul... My Alt is 48 and range should be between 5-33ul. The doctor said he's not overly concerned about that as its hapoened before and rectified itself. I have thyroid issues too and my blood work is monitored regularly. I'm beginning to think now that all my problems stem from my bowel. I think with the alt and gamma returning high means my body is fighting off something. I'll follow this up tomorrow and press the hospital for my results. I will keep you posted and again thanks for your help.
