Newly diagnosed - brother has oesophageal cancer

Hello

My name is Jennie. My brother has very recently been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. He is getting his scan tomorrow. He is 57yrs old. Otherwise, incredibly fit and healthy. This has been a huge shock.

On reading, it seems dependent on whether it has spread, that this might be inoperable? If so, are any treatments offered?

Does anyone have any advice on where to get good information on this area of cancer?

Many thanks,

Jennie

  • Hi there, am sorry about your brother, discovering any kind of cancer is always a huge shock.
He will need to find out what grading his cancer is, if there is any spread to other organs or lymph nodes. They will probably do further tests and scans - my husband found out his was stage four by having a PET scan in November. His main tumor in oesophagus could not be operated on, as it had spread to his lung and lymph nodes. He is currently having chemotherapy treatment.

I have found this is a great place for support and information, sadly it seems more common than we think. Eating is also an issue with this tyoe of cancer and there has been a lot of helpful advice about that here too.

I hope that you get the answers you need for him, you are clearly a very supportive kind family member, you take of yourself too x

  • Thank you so much for your kind words. I am so sorry that your husbands condition was inoperable. I fear that this might be the case for my brother as I think he might have had the condition for a while. He is experiencing chest pain, this being the reason he sought medical help. We will take it a day at a time.

Can I ask how the illness presents going forward? Is Chemotherapy painful? So sorry. I know you are going through this, I don't wish to cause you more sadness if discussing it is difficult?

So many questions whizz around your head don't they? We are a strong family and will support my brother through this very challenging time. We will hope for the best and prepare for whatever support he may need. Any tips and advice would be most welcome. thank you.

  • I dont mind you asking me at all, I am still "new" to it all and find it so helpful to know what others have experienced so I know what to expect. He has difficulty eating solid foods, due to the tumor blocking his oesophagus. The chemo, EOX, has made him incredibly tired, feel sick, and bad upset stomach, but everyone reacts differently to it. He used to cycle fifteen miles and swim every day but sleeps most of the time at the moment.

  • Thank you.

My brother is also a very keen runner and has had a very healthy diet for years. Cannot feel that this seems unfair, at the same time, he is incredibly fit so hopefully he has good reserves to get through this. He has been told to pile on the pounds as he is bound to lose weight going through the treatments. Any tips on what food seems to be accomodated best?

  • He will know what he can tolerate, or feels like eating. My husband can only manage soft foods, soup, etc. not meat, a dietician was on hand to advise us via a telephone call recently. They advise build up drinks, complan etc.
