Hi there. Please try not to worry. It's my understanding that all breast lumps/ pains etc get referred to the breast clinic. They will probably do a mammogram and ultrasound and hopefully all will be clear. The good thing is is that the referral is usually quite quick! Good luck x

It's easy to say don't worry, much harder to do!

Your doctor should have spoken to you about their referral system. Typically anything out of the ordinary is referred for specialist input. They tend to use the urgent referrals in most cases. It doesn't mean they suspect cancer, it means it is a possible concern that need urgent assistance. 

I had a two week referral a few years ago which ended up being a benign tumor. However, December I had another two week referral which was cancer. 

It's just so difficult to say what it may or may not be until those tests are performed. 

In terms of the clinic they are normally a well oiled system. Most hospitals like to do all the necessary tests in one visit. You'll have a discussion with a consultant who will examine you. Then they will send you for a ultrasound scan or a mammogram or both. At this point they normally tell you what they see. So I was told I have a lump that they suspected to be a fibroadenoma but to make sure they wanted to take some biopsies. 

Now they usually take biopsies while scanning to make sure they get the right area. It's all painless and very quick. 

Then you wait for the results which normally take 1-2 weeks. That's tough. So look after yourself and try to be mindful in your days and don't look too far ahead.

Thank you for replying with all that information that has helped me alot. Could I ask how long these appointments usually take. I have heard 3 hours sometimes. :( 

I think it depends where you are but my appointment took just over an hour to do all those tests.
