Short term large asbestos exposure please help

I am a construction worker in the U.K. recently an incident occurred where two people went down to the basement of the house and unknowingly cut an older boiler which was coated in asbestos in two with a disc cutter to make it easier to remove. They described that they couldn’t see their hand in front of their faces with how much dust was in the room.. I happened to be in the room above the basement and there was a bit of dusting seeping into the room I was in so I went to get a mask and opened the windows in the room and continued working not thinking anything of it. It wasn’t until the boiler was taken outside it was confirmed it was asbestos the cut was probably about 20minites long so I was exposed for about an hour.? The site has been shut down for investigation. Can anyone tell me whether this will cause me potential health conditions or not please?

Edit: I also had to strip all my clothes off before I left site so it wont have been taken home to munch family. I am only 21 so just concerned for my health later in life. Thanks

  • Hi,

I can certainly see why you're worried given the amount of dust the other workers described but it sounds like you did all the right things to minimise your exposure (wearing a mask - I assume P3 dust mask or similar, opening windows, changing clothes etc). It's definitely an issue that is worth taking seriously but I'd be more worried if I was one of the people in the basement tbh. I'm absolutely not any sort of expert on asbestos so don't know what the actual level of risk is for single exposures. There's no recognised safe level of exposure but most people you see who have developed issues have been exposed over a longer period of time (I know of people who have had issues from reasonably short term jobs but those have involved at least a few weeks of work with exposure to it, usually when there was less knowledge and safety measures were a lot more casual). I think it's definitely worth finding out whether your employer has an occupational health policy and if so whether you could get an appointment with occ health to discuss this. Are you part of a union that has a local safety rep or has your employer got a designated person in charge of health & safety?  Is the investigation an official one by HSE and if so have they given you any sort of information on who to contact if you have questions? Those could all be ways of getting some more info on this. Otherwise, you could make an appointment to talk to your GP. It's fairly unlikely they have any particular expertise on asbestos either but they can at least log the incident in your medical records (useful in case it does become relevant at some point) and consider what follow-up if any might be needed. Also, one thing you can do to reduce you risk of issues is to stop smoking if you currently do (there seems to be a relationship with increased risk of lung problems in people who also have asestos exosure). All the best!
