HPV and borderline cell changes

I had a smear test on the 30th Nov 2020 and had a letter from the cervical screening unit yesterday (8.1.21) to stay that I need to have colposcopy. I have HPV and some borderline cells change that they want to examine further.

I've read the leaflet and have spoken to friends who have been in similar situations. I know that this is common and that cell changes don't necessarily lead to cervical cancer.

I need help with the anxiety and stress that this is causing me. I struggle with my mental health anyway but the worry of what the doctor/nurse might find at a colposcopy  is consuming my thoughts. My friend passed away last year from cervical cancer (stage 4) so this has been a result trigger for me. How do I deal with the affect on mental health as I wait to have the examination?

  • Hi Loreal211,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It's never easy while waiting for tests or results, and I can understand that the situation with your friend is making things worse.

Different things work for different people, but often trying not to dwell on it too much while you are waiting can help. To support this, try to keep yourself busy and also focused on any work plus things you enjoy, to help take your mind off things. It is a bit cliched but try to take things one day at a time.

If you have any medical questions to ask your doctor at your next appointment, make a note of them - along with any worries - and then leave the piece of paper alone until your appointment.

If you would like to talk things through with someone, then you can call our nurses on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
