Asbestos exposure in a home

Hello.  I hve been suffering from wheezing and shortness of breath (which i think is allergy related) but am now very anxious  about asbestos insulation boards we had in a cupboard that were unpainted and so not sealed and we loved with for about 7 years, including the first 5 years of our kids lives.

About 6.5m2 of unsealed boards in a cupboard (house built around 75) with a louvre door (an old blown air heating system so not airtight when shut).  Stored hover, cleaning stuff etc, so not loads of disturbance directly.

Didn't know it was asbestos  until I started working on the house to get more space for the kids.

Generally it looked in ok condition visually, but if you touched it white dust comes onto fingers.  I am sure I remember seeing dust collecing at the bottom of the boards once or twice.

The boards are now removed and the house generally seems a bit less dusty, which is another worry...

I know there is nothing I can do now, but worried this stuff not being painted is really bad  and there are risks to the kids in the future.  Is there a way to find out if it is possible for fibre levels in houses to be dangerous, or if that is unlikely.

It seems that generally these boards are painted or plastered over and that makes me think having them unsealed in a home is possibly a real risk?

Also, is there anything I can / should do now to help manage the risks?  No one smokes so that is good!

Grateful for any thoughts or advice.

Many thanks

Jamie

  • Hello Jamie,

If you are unsure you were exposed to asbestos or are worried about the dust, I think it is advisable to contact your local council and speak to an asbestos officer who should be able to advise you further. You can also get some good guidance regarding asbestos exposure on the Health and Safety Executive website here

It's important to remember that most people have been exposed to low levels of asbestos, as it can be found in soil and air and yet few people become ill from it.

    Hope this helps!

  • before i go,if the asbestos was bluish in color its not so good but only if you dril or fix into it.if the dust residue is white then your fine.i have plastered over hundreds of these ab boards to seal them in,dont worry about it.
