Hi Adouglas just read your post and wanted to put your mind at rest And answer some of your questions.,as ive had 39 Colonoscopy' procedure s .

Firstly the procedure doesn't hurt itself,it is just a bit uncomfortable  as the camera goes through the bowel, but no pain,I always have sedation though as I am not brave enough not to,but I know some people on here have posted that they don't have sedation and are ok,but personally I get to wound up and I find it helps me to relax, which is a good thing, whilst having the procedure.

The sedation doesn't put you out,you are still aware of evertything ,you can still talk and look at the procedure beung done on the screen.

If there are any polyps, they are taken away, and you don't even feel a thing,it doesn't hurt.

The time it takes depends if they are only lookung at the Lowe bowel, or the whole bowel.

After the procedure you are put in recovery, and  your observations are taken ,your blood pressure . Then you are told you can get dressed, and then you are given a cup.of tea and sometimes a biscuit.

The usualy come and talk things through with you about your procedure,if thry have found anything, what they have done if they did,( if it was polyps taken away, they will tell you etc) .

You will be given a sheet which will explain evetything that has been done, and it will tell you evertything you need to know at thst point in time.

Sometimes you get a follow up letter , an an appointment, if needed.

Please don't worry ,as I said " I've had 39 and lived to tell the tail lol,you will be well looked after ,and evertything will be talked through and explained beforehand, when you sign the consent form.

The only thing I will say which isn't pleasent is the prep you have to take befire, you will be sent all the information and prep through the post and going to the toilet  as much as you do,to clear your bowels does make your rectum sore,so use some nappy cream like bepanrham  or any nappy cream ,chemist is usualy good at advising you with one's are the best.

Good luck with evetything, I'm sure you will be fine, hope this has helped .

  • Am sat in my bathroom the night before my first colonoscopy "preparing" myself for tomorrow.

I've been googling like mad as I am worrying myself sick about it all.

Came across your post and just wanted to say thank you for being so honest and open. It has really helped put my mind at rest.

Hope all is well with you.

Hi Aluce thank you for your reply glad my post helped you ,.I hope everything was OK with your Colonoscopy..

  • I did have the sedation, and never felt anything. mind you from the night before there's no wonder I fell asleep during the procedure.I caught little snippets of how many polyps were removed, I think he said it was four. plus scrapes and I'm still waiting the results of the biopsies. Two ways of looking at it, 1- no news is good news.

2- no point in telling him till I have face to face before the bad news..

The cancer unit in liverpool said because I had four polyps removed. I was asked to have an upper GI, which is next Saturday. because I had raised veins in my bowel. I had an eosophagus rupture in 2015, and was meant to have them done every year. the last two years I was not recalled to have this procedure done. Not that I was complaining. I'd sooner not have it done.  But if I'm to have a liver transplant these are things I need to have done,  to even be considered for a transplant. From my first appointment I was told I met the criteria. then two weeks ago, I saw another liver specailist who said because I  was recently admitted to hospital, I'm now not fit to be considered for a transplant. I'm sure that liver specailist was a HGV driver. I felt like I'd been run over and then reversed back over me.

Do doctors build your hopes up, just to knock you back down. that's what it feels like. two steps forward 6 steps back.
