Anal cancer

Does anyone on here had Anal cancer. I visited my doctor the beginning of this week who found a lump in my anus and I have been referred to the hospital for possible biopsy. The letter said I will be contacted within two weeks to get an appointment. It’s only gone a week and I have not heard anything and feeling very stressed. Very shocked as I am only in my sixties and never smoked or took any risks that are seen to promote this type of cancer. Hopefully It comes out negative when I have the biopsy but you always think the worst. Thankyou

  • Hello Petiteme and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

Hopefully some of our members who have experience of this diagnosis will get back to you soon but if you'd like to join in on other discussions about anal cancer you can use the 'search option' function in the blue bar.

The waiting is always tough but fingers crossed you'll get an appointment soon and that the results of your biopsy will bring good news.

    All the best,

  • Hi, i found 2 lumps at the begining of November. There was a bit of a delay with my referral as it needed blood tests to support it so I would Chase it if you have not heard anything yet. Once the referal went through ok things have happened really quickily. I have had a flexible cystoscopy and the investigation under general anesthestic where one of the lumps was removed and now waiting for the results of the CT, MRI and a PEP scan to be booked and ee what happens next. I hope you have had an appointment. Ill be keeping my fingers crossed for good news for you

  • Hi, thank you so much for responding. I did get an appointment to have a sigmoidoscopy the day before Christmas Day. I tried to be positive as I feel pretty healthy. They found a small non cancerous polyp further up and two lumps on the neck of the anus which they said was difficult to access. They tried to take a small biopsy but said I would have to go back for a MRI scan and to remove the polyp I would have a general anaesthetic. I asked him if he thought it was cancer and he said he was pretty sure it wasn’t. But the pretty sure bit still disappointed me. It’s still scary isn’t it. So I am to wait for the results of biopsy and MRI scan. I have tried to not look up on the internet information until I know what is happening. I am trying to be positive but also very worried. I wish you well in your news.

  • I'm glad you got an appointment. Within my lump they removed they did find some cancer cells but there were no margins so although im very positive im also quite scared and just want to know whether they have got it all.  Im going for my colonoscopy and polypectomy tomorrow so on a liquid diet now and have to take the bowel medicine at 8 tonight which I've heard is delightful...not lol. You will have to let me know how you get on with your other appointments. Take care x

  • Yes my daughter had the colonoscopy a few years ago and she was given a drink similar to a very thick milkshake. She said the first cup was nice but she had to drink a litre of the stuff! At least it will be a very thorough intervention. Let me know how it goes for you. X

  • Hi again. I have been reading on here about MRI scans and what procedure they take. But it says they do an MRI to see how far the cancer is! It’s a bit worrying as the doctor has not said anything about it was cancer. I’m hoping that this is just to see how deep the polyp is as he said it was very near the nerves. I also have a wrist full of nuts and bolts from surgery two years ago. Wishing you the best of luck in your scans. X

  • Hi, i think all the scans give them an idea on what's going on inside. They are probably just being thorough so try not to worry. Not sure how have the nuts and bolts will affect the scan I guess it depends on what they are made from. Hope you are ok xx

  • Thank you. Please do let me know how you got on. X

  • Well ive had my colonoscopy and polypectomy.was first in at 9 and home now. The surgeon removed 32!!! And ive got to go back to have more removed. He didn't think any looked suspicious which is a good thing. He does need to refer me to a genetic specialist to look into why I have so many. Feeling absolutely fine in myself after it though xx

  • I am so thrilled for you! That’s great news. You can feel more positive now. I will let you know when I get my results of the small biopsy they took. They wasn’t sure it would be enough due to the location but we will see. It’s been a week now so hopefully I will hear next week. X
