Can't help stressing!

Hello everyone...

I'm new here :) googling everything seems to have navigated me to this page. So for a while now I've felt a hard pea-sized lump at the top of my breast, nearer my arm pit. I've 34H boobs and for a long time have thought it's probably just fatty tissue etc. Some days I can feel it really well and other days I can't. It seems to be quite deep.

Anyway, called my GP and was seen yesterday. She couldnt pinpoint the exact lump I was on about (typical) but did say she could feel an obvious difference between both breasts and said one was particularly fibrous? Due to my maternal grandmother's young breast cancer diagnosis, the doctor stated she would rather be safe and refer me to the breast clinic.

My boobs are currently sore with me constantly feeling about... Obviously trying not to worry and ever so thankful my husband has a family plan of private health care through his work. So I'm waiting for an appointment soon. What should I expect from the breast clinic? GP said I'd have an ultrasound anyway. I'm only 30 with 2 young children...not breastfed for over 5 years so ruled out any issues from that.

Please tell me people feel lumps and go to the doctors and they can't be felt?

  • Hello taylor1989

I'm sorry to hear that you've been referred to the breast clinic following some changes that you've recently noticed. I know that lots of our members here will understand how difficult this period of uncertainty can be whilst waiting for appointments and tests.

It's not uncommon for women to have lumpy breasts but it can help to keep in mind that the majority of women who attend breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer.

It's likely on the day that you will see a specialist breast surgeon who will talk through your personal, and family, history and examine both your breasts. Typically women of your age will have an ultrasound as the density of breast tissue in younger women can make it difficult to pick up changes on a mammogram. However the Consultant may also request a mammogram. Sometimes a biopsy is taken on the day in clinic.

It can help to talk things through if you're feeling particularly worried so if you'd like to chat to one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

    Best wishes,
