Referral

Hello- I feel so bad posting this but I can't stop worrying.

last few months I've had pain in my right breast and could feel a lump- made a doctors appointment and I've just been examined.

the doctor said it doesn't feel like cancer to her, but must make a referral for me for the breast clinic to double check.

now I'm petrified she is wrong- 18 months ago I was diagnosed with a blood clot in my brain so I have major health anxiety.

Im sorry to post this here but I can't stop worrying

  • Hi Flipside,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear about the blood clot to your brain and can fully understand why this has made you so anxious.

From what you say, it sounds as if your GP doesn't feel that there is anything to worry about, but she is just making sure. The only way to be absolutely certain is to have some tests carried out at the breast clinic. In most cases these are simple tests such as mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy and it can take a further 1-2 weeks to get the results of these tests.

Most people immediately think of cancer when referred to the breast clinic, but only 1 person in every 8 referred will get this diagnosis. There are a number of less terrifying reasons for breast lumps. You can take reassurance from the fact that your GP is making sure that she is not missing anything.

This is always a worrying time, especially because there are so many unknowns. The way you feel is perfectly normal. We all tend to think the worst at this stage, but fortunately this seldom comes to pass. I felt like this at first too. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years. Treatment is not a walk in the park, but it is doable. Regardless of the outcome, you will feel better once you know the outcome.

In the meanwhile, try to keep yourself busy to help pass the time.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kindest regards,

    Jolamine xx
