Concern

Hi,

I have been referred to the breast clinic by my GP as a precaution, he did not feel there was anything to worry about but he said he would always refer to be sure.

I received a call to book my appointment and the lady confirming my booking advised that I needed to allow 2 hours for the appointment as I would need to have a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy.

I was confused as how she would know that now, as I thought this was determined at the appointment?! She said it was routine but didn't seem overly convinced.

I'm just wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar?

Thank you x

    Hi Minnie,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

The lady you spoke to was quite correct. It depends upon your age as to whether or not you will have a mammogram. Younger ladies tend to have denser breasts, which don't show up too well on mammogram. Ladies in this age group often only have an ultrasound and sometimes a biopsy.

Those of us who are a little older get 'the works', ie. all three tests.

It is always a worrying time waiting for the results of these tests, as this can take 1-2 weeks for them to come back. Doing everything at your first visit means that you get this all out of the way as quickly as possible and, your stress is reduced to a minimum.

Is your appointment soon? I hope that you don't have too long to wait and that all turns out well.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kindest regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much for your response.

I'm 31 so would that automatically place me in the category to have all three tests? They have told me I'd have the results the same day.

My appointment is next Wednesday so not too long to wait.

    Thank you xx

    Hi Minnie,

I am not a doctor, so I don't know the cut off point for a mammogram. As far as I know most women under 40 don'thave one, but there are exceptions, as they are sometimes still needed to complete an assessment. I expect that the consultant may judge by how dense your breasts look like as much as anything else.

I'm glad to hear that you only have a week to wait and, I hope that it all goes well for you.

Please update us with your results. We are always here for you.

    Kindest regarsds,

    Jolamine xx
