Swollen armpit and pain

Hi,

I'm absolutely beside myself with worry - I had bone pains in my arms and hands for a couple of weeks (not uncommon for me, I get this sometimes with my anxiety) which I ignored then I noticed my right armpit is swollen. I thought this was just my body fighting off a cold as I started sneezing and had a bit of a sore throat on and off for a couple of weeks, which has gone now but the swelling is still there and is super painful, radiating into my shoulder, arm, hand, shoulder blade and chest so decided it was time to see my GP.

She examined the area and said my armpit felt 'full' but couldn't feel any lumps as such, and referred me on fast track to the breast clinic but was trying to reassure me by saying age is on my side (I'm 26). The pain got so bad that the last couple of days that I was even told to go to A&E by 111 as painkillers weren't doing anything. Doctors at the hospital examined and could see/feel the swelling and thought it might be infection but blood tests and chest X-ray were clear so they sent me home saying it's all referred pain from the swelling and told me to attend the breast clinic still as they can see more.

I was kind of hoping it would just be due to an infection which could just be easily treated with some antibiotics. But no one seems to be able to suggest any other alternatives and they're being very vague about what might be causing the swelling and I just feel like they're just trying to avoid telling me they think it's because of cancer. I'm so worried and the wait for my appointment is driving me mad!

Has anyone had any similar symptoms before? Any advice on how to stop worrying so much would be a huge help too!

  • Hello Amy94,

It's difficult to tell what could be going on, but hopefully you'll be able to find out more in your appointment at the breast clinic. Please try not to worry, nine out of ten people referred in this way turn out not to have cancer. You can read more about urgent referrals here. A good thing to practice is Mindfulness, which can help you calm your worries and focus on the present.

    Take care,

  • Hi Amy,

I know just how worrying this wait is having been through it a few times myself. Please try not to worry about cancer, there are a number of different reasons for swollen lymph nodes.

It sounds as if your other doctors are happy to wait for you to be seen at the breast clinic, as they are likely to carry out some tests which are more likely to show the cause.

As Anastasia said, the odds are in your favour, so here's hoping that it will be good news.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kindest regards,

    Jolamine xx
