My dad and prostrate issues

Hi there

im wondering if anyone can help. My dad had a raised PSA level a couple of weeks ago and is a higher risk of prostrate cancer due to age and his brother also having it. He was referred straight for a MRI scan. The hospital have called him today and told him he now needs a biopsy as they found a lump close to his bladder. He's had pain in his back for some time now. The nurse said in the phone something about number going from 1-5 and dads was a 4?? My dad being my dad didnt ask any further questions. Does anyone know what this means????

  • Hi Laralou, You didn't say how old your dad is, but I'm 63 and had a elevated PSA level of at 9.2 ng/ml , so that's quite alot higher than your dad. (note the normal PSA range does go up the older you are).
The results of my latest MRI scan, said:  "Your recent prostate MRI scan does not show any definite features of concern..."  They have arranged another PSA and urine test for me next week.
So there are a number of reasons for an elevated PSA level, not all of them cancer.
If your still worried, I'd suggesting not 'Googling USA sites', and just contact the CRUK nurses.

  • Hi 729.
I'm glad to hear that your test went well. My dad is 69. The issue that is worrying me is that his MRI has discovered a lump. After doing some research it appears that the MRIs are measured on probablyilities of cancer being present on scale 1-5 1 being unlikely to 5 being highly likely. It looks like my dad was given a 4 so worried for him.

  •  I'm no doctor, but I think untill they actually have the results of the biopsy they can't tell for sure its cancer.
Maybe if you contact the the CRUK nurses, they might be able to allay some of your worries?
Anyway, I wish you and your dad all the best.
