Terrified of skin cancer 19y/o, what can I do to prevent it?

Hi everyone,
I am naturally blonde, have blue eyes, fair skin and a fair amount of moles. My fear of skin cancer (particularly melanoma) started when I was on holiday last year and stupidly didn't wear any sun cream on the first day, as I was desperate to get a bit of colour. I got extremely burnt and was in pain for the next week. I then read that one sunburn in your childhood (I was 18) can increase the risk of melanoma by 50%. I am on my gap year just now and planned to travel next year but I am now very scared as I feel like it will increase my risk of skin cancer. What can I do to prevent this. And is it likely I will get skin cancer in my life. Any help is appreciated.

  • Welcome to the community Cam although I'm sorry for the reason you're joining us.

We have some information about the risk of sunburn and some tips on how to stay safe in the sun just here but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses then they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Hopefully some of our members will share their advice and experiences with you soon as well.

I hope this helps and you're able to enjoy your travels next year.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Cam1, I'm no doctor, just a 63yr old who has had skin cancer (malignant melanoma) back in 2017. I don't know where you read that one single sunburn in your childhood can increase the risk of melanoma by 50%?. (a US site maybe?, I suggest sticking to nhs or Cancer Reaserch sites). But it is true the more you can cut down sunburn, the more you can lower the risk of skin cancer. 50 years ago I was living in Cyprus (for 3 years) and we were running around day in and day out just wearing shorts and very little else ( and at the start we did regularly get sun burned ). I rember my Mum did try and get us to wear sun hats and she did put suncream on us when we went out together (but back then they didn't have high SPF suncreams). So I think if you follow the guidance Steph gave from now on, and try to avoid any more sunburn in the future that your risk of developing skin cancer later in life will be greatly reduced.

    Hi 729,

Thanks so much for the reply! After doing more research I realise that one sunburn isn't as bad as I initially thought! I will take the advice above onboard. Thanks again! Xx

  • Hi Steph, Thanks for the advice, I have read the links and they were really helpful :) xx
