Ovarian Cancer

Hey,

Basically long story short version, I went for my first ever smear test a few weeks ago (I've had two children) I explained to the doctor I'd had some pins ect, she sent me for an ultrasound which I went for a few days after the smear. The day I got my smear results which said I have High Risk HPV and cell changes to the neck of womb and cervix, I got the phone call with my scan results saying I have a mass on the right ovary she wanted me in the same day for a CA125 blood test which I couldn't as I was menstrating she pretty much said they suspect it to be ovarian cancer, I had my blood test done yesterday. She explained on the phone once she'd got the blood work back that I'd be referred to a Gyneacologist oncologist department at the hospital and they'd do further testing and scans take it from there. I'm unsure what to think or do now? I'm very young and worried my kids are just little aswell.

  •  Hello Kirsty

Have you had your results back yet? I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Feb this year.  You definatley need to see the Gyneacologist oncologist & have the cT scans & get the ball rolling. I know how you feel it is frightening, write down on paper before going anything you can think of to ask as I found I went blank when I got in the room

    Good luck

    Remi

  • Hey Remi,

nothing back from the bloods yet I'm hoping I will get a phone call today and find out what the next stage is. I've prepared myself for the outcome it is likely to be ovarian cancer. I'm not worried about it being cancer itself I'm just worried about the next stages eg surgery ect.

    thanks Kirsty

  • Hi Kirsty

Keep pushing them for the results & to get it sorted.  I understand what you mean, I was really worried especialy with covid as well, as my husband could only drop me off at the door.  He was not allowed to visit after either.  The operation was not as scary as I thought it would be, remember they deal with this many times a day. The nurses on the ward were great & masks are worn by the staff & the beds are social distanced now so no need to worry.  I was in hospital 3 days, when you go in make sure you wear something loose like jog bottoms & I know it sounds funny but loose knickers. And shoes make sure they are not to tight when you go in as your feet sweel slightly. I found for the first 3 weeks a loose nighty was good to wear & make sure you wear the stockings they give you until you are up to normal walking around etc.  As soon as you can in hospital sit up & try to shuffle around it does help

Oh & also on the day you come round try & sip water little & often as this will help

    Remi

    Any questions just ask

  • Hey Remi,

what did they do to you regarding operating wise? Are you going through chemotherapy now? How are you feeling about everything now? Sorry for all the questions. How long did it take from finding out until you started treatment?

thankyou so much for all the information you've already given it's putting my mind at ease.

  • Hey Remi,

    thanks xx

  • No Worries I wish I had had someone to ask.

So last September I started to experience a pain in my right side of stomach that shot round into my groin.  This went on for months I kept going back to different Dr in our surgery & eventually a woman Dr in January I think.   Took my husband with me & we insisted that something be done was told to go to A&E.  They did a ultra scan it showed a fibroid, & took bloods.  They sent me home.  Results came back from Dr CA125 was not high, but I was still getting the pain.  So as a precaution she sent me to Gynae consultant at hospital, he was not overly concered & sent me home!! Week later I still had the pain & phoned up his secretary & insisted that something was not right so he refereed me to cancer specialist.  She did a 3D scan & found a mass on my left ovarie. Said it was ovarian cancer. My reactions are probulary wat you are experiencing.. Numb, denial (no when they open me it wont be that) Anger that I had to push that long to get it sorted. Fear, why me?. Sound familiar? The operation I was cut from the top of my pubis to my belly button as I had a full hysterectomy (everythig out) I had internal desolvable stiches & glued cut. As soon as you are back in bed they will hook you up to morphine which you can control yourself. You will not be left alone a nurse will monitor you constantly. I sat up the next morning & had cornflakes & a cup of tea. I also got out of bed after & sat in the chair by the bed then had a little walk with the physio with me. I finished chemo 4 weeks ago & recieved a call last week telling me I am in remission.  I found that when I first started chemo my mood would dip it would make me weepy & I am not that type of person.  Covid has not helped as I have not been able to get out apart from hospital. Don't worry about having the chemo, it is a long day so take a book or kindle ipod you name it.  Not everyone having treatment in there wants to talk. Take a drink & wear comfy clothes. I was warned I would loose my hair which was past my shoulders.  So I decided that I would have it cut off & donated it to Little Stars childrens wig makers.  I found by doing that I was in control & also did not have to wake up with it on my pillow.  I have lost my hair stubble I am bald but good new my hair has started to come back its fluffy bum fluff :)  I wont deny it is sad to loose it but it is the least of your worries yeah. You can do it Kirsty be brave, keep pushing to get it sorted.  x

  • Hey Remi,

oh really? So your bloods werent high, That's reassuring for me knowing I won't be fobbed off. I've been referred to Gynea. My doctor is going to phone me on Tuesday to explain next steps ect. Did the doctor explain how far stage your cancer was? How long did it take from diagnosis to actually getting your hysterectomy surgery?

you are a very brave woman for sure! Fluffy bum fluff lol, you are funny!

  • No the highest was 17. My cancer was 1c boardering on 2 as it had thrown out tendrils to my bowel!!

February confirmed cancer & treatment needed + they do an MRI scan before op. oh just looked on calendar thought op was March it was May 1st. 1st chemo was June then every 3 weeks .My chemo was PALITAXEL & CARBOPLATIN. They give you steriods also. Please let me know how you get on Tuesday I will be thinking of you. They will assign you a mac millan nurse who should be there from when you are diagnosed.  I must admit I did not make much use of mine as I found the there there approach did not help me.  You will find your own way of coping

Good Luck for Tuesday & if you want to ask anything else or just say hi do so OK XX

  • Thankyou so much for replying and giving me all this information hun, it's really helped a lot! I am so glad you are in remission and your going to be okay! You are very brave and you seem to have handled it all well. May I ask how old you are if you don't mind me asking?
