HPV Positive & Abnormal Cells

Hi all,

I had a cervical screening back in August and the results came back a few weeks ago confirming I am HPV positive (was so unaware of this) and that I also have low-grade dyskaryosis.

I have been waiting almost 3 weeks for a referal to have a colposcopy and I just phoned the department and they said I should hopefully hear from them before the 8th November which is still a very long time.

I am just worried that the cells may get worse over this waiting period?

Has anyone been in the same situation?

  • Hi Zenem and welcome to the forum.

I'm sure some of our members who have been in this situation will share their advice and experiences with you soon but whilst you wait I just wanted to share some information we have about cervical screening results.

I hope this helps put your mind at ease but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Fingers crossed you won't be waiting too much longer for your colposcopy.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi zenem

I had exactly the same as you, never heard of HPV before that, I had colposcopy within 3 weeks, it was no worse than a smear test to be honest they removed all the cells. I was then put on yearly smears, after 5 years I had a few cells return so had it done again, after another 5 years nothing so in 2017 I went onto 3 yearly smears. The cells are slow growing I was informed that is why you can go 3 years between smears, so having found them for you please try not too worry, they will  be sorted out for you x take care

  • Hi,

I had a colposopy a few weeks ago (just after Christmas) after finding out I had HPV and slightly abnormal cells.

If anyone wants to chat about it, please let me know. I'm happy to provide any information you need on my experience.

There is nothing to worry about!

  • Hi zenem

I had a letter through yesterday with my smear results. HPV positive and borderline changes in the cells.

I am waiting for an appointment for a coloscopy and I'm terrified of what will happen and what they might find.

I'm 58, been through the menopause with no problem and haven't had a partner for 9 years. I don't know if age makes a difference or the fact that I'm post menopause.

I'm trying not to think about it too much but it's always there.

  • hi, i have just read this and sent you a friend request x

  • Hi lolawoo

I'm still waiting for my appointment to come through the post.

I'm thinking that they can't be too concerned.

It doesn't stop me worrying though

  • Hi Lolawoo

So I had my colposcopy last week.

All's well, I just have to have another smear test next year.

    Hope you're ok

  • Hi

I am literally going through this now. I have 2 weeks left before my colposcopy and I am so scared.

How did it go for you?

  • Hi Helen... I received a letter yesterday that I am HVP positive and have borderline changes. I have never heard of this. I am waiting appointment letter for Colonoscopy.

I am so so scared. I have t even got anyone to talk to about this.

how are you now and do you have any advice for me.

    H x

  • Hi Harj,

I have thankfully received a normal result since my latest smear test which was a year following my colposcopy.

My experience at the colposcopy was very painless, only a slight stinging as they insert some acidic liquid so the cells show on the screen. But nothing very painful at all! The appointment doesnt take long, and the nurses will explain everything to you beforehand. I read some horror stories online about the colposcopy but I can assure you it's nothing to worry about! If you have any questions just let me know
