Hi, just had this done today and wanted to assure everyone it isn't that bad. I hate needles so didn't want sedation, but was really worried. Going into theatre was a bit bizarre, and the throat spray is like a bitter banana! Kicked in after a few minutes and then lied on my left side and a mouth plug was inserted. Lights went out and the tube was inserted!
Dodny really gags and once it's in past the tongue it is actually OK. Feels OK getting to the stomach but start to get gassy as air is pumped into it to widen it. I did burp/ expel air a few times as a consequence but it's not like vomiting. Tube moved to my intestine next and could feel it. Best thing throughout is to focus on deep breathing: in the nose and out the mouth. Doctor took some biopsies which felt weird; tugging but not painful. Lots of air in the tummy by then which makes you burp some which got annoying. After that tube was removed which felt quite long but actually wasn't. Takes about 30 minutes for the spray effects to go, and then had some water (don't have hot drinks immediately).
it was over in under 7 minutes total. It isn't painful at all, just a bit unpleasant at times. I left the hospital about 30 minutes after leaving theatre so felt great.
the sedation is probabaly useful if you're really nervous, but that's me and please note it honestly wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Love to you all XXX
