10cm+ Ovarian cyst- would I know if it's ruptured?

Hi,

I first knew I had an ovarian cyst in August and it was 10cm, then I was admitted after an A&e visit in September and it had got slightly bigger .

Last week at work I was in awful pain, also had a UTI which has cleared up nicely with antibiotics and rest from work (few days sick, now on annual leave). The pain got quite bad on Friday and was actually sick after work Thursday morning- then started 3-day abx course. I now feel a lot better, just a few aches.

Would I know about it more of it ruptured last week? I'm guessing I'd be quite ill with over 10cm of cyst fluid free floating in my abdomen?

I'm due to have it removed 21st November and will feel a little daft if it's already gone.

Many thanks x

  • Hello Hannah8924

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some health concerns recently which have resulted in the hospital finding an ovarian cyst. It's understandable that you may be feeling concerned about your upcoming surgery.
I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better after the antibiotics but do speak to your Consultant about your concerns as I'm sure they they will be able to offer you some reassurance.

I hope that everything goes smoothly.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello, just thought I would reply as I've had a similar experience! I had a cyst on my ovary the size of a grapefruit and was scheduled in to have it surgically removed. One night I had the most awful stomach pains and when I went in for my pre op, it turns out it had ruptured. I'm presuming the night I got the stomach pains was when it had happened. I didn't feel unwell the days after I got the stomach pain either. But I would speak to your gynaecologist before and just explain what's happened and they should be able to advise more. Hope you're okay! X

  • Hi Hannah

Just reading your message is amazing as it is almost identical to my experience starting August 2019.I was found to have a 16cm ovarian tumour that was leaking & ruptured in surgery in the November.Due to my age of 65  it was found to be stage 1c high grade cancer.I started 4mths if carbo/taxol chemo end of December.A weird journey of mixed emotions but I'm here, no sign of cancer at present & forever grateful to all the wonderful dedicated people along the journey that saved my life.Best advice is to go with the flow, listen, ask questions &trust the professionals. They will never think you are silly, they have heard it all before! Sending  virtual hugs in this difficult time.X
