Early stage bladder cancer

Hello everyone.

I am 29 years old, never smoked, don't drink heavy and don't work with chemicals. 3 or so months ago I saw a small bit of blood in my urine and got it investigated. Was told as it was 1 off to just monitor it. 6 weeks later it happened again, again just a small drop. Got the check done and it came back showing a small tumour in the bladder. Had it removed and found out last week that it was cancerous but superficial. Everyone says it must be a big relief but I don't feel like that, I am still shocked at 29 I had that and I am terrified its now all over my body! (I have anxiety) I have a few questions that is eating away at me.

1. I didn't recieve any chemo into my bladder when I had my op 4 weeks ago. They said they don't think I needed it but I worry now it'll grow back! Has anyone been in that boat before?

2. How likely is it that a reoccurrance happens with a superficial tumour being removed?

3. Can anyone offer advice on how I can calm my anxiety of it being else where In my body.

I have 2 young kids that I am very scared about leaving!

Thanks

  • Hello JamesSa and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had an experience of being diganosed with cancer. I think the thoughts and emotions that you've described are common for lots of people who have had cancer. It's natural to be worried about "have I had the right treatment" or "will it come back"  but I think that most of the people who have experienced those thoughts would agree that it helps to talk to someone.

In the first instance I'd recommend speaking to your GP and explaining how you are struggling with anxiety since your diagnosis and operation. If you were allocated a specialist nurse at the hospital then do give them a call as well as they will be able to answer some of your specific questions and may be able to refer you for support if necessary.

I'd also suggest giving our team of nurses a call. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 and I'm sure they will be able to offer some advice and support as well.

You might also want to have a look at this information on our website that you may find helpful and also has some tips about coping strategies.

I hope some of this helps.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi JamesSA,

How are you doing? Have you had any more additional treatment?

  • Hello.  Not since the TURBT In 2020. Had check ups and so far it's all clear. Hopefully it stays that way.

My mental health is back to normal pre cancer thankfully but always keeping eye in my urine.

    Thanks for asking after me.

  • Im so pleased that you are doing ok. And I bet your daughters are keeping you busy.

Seems blood in the urine is the main symptom. I've had UTIs for 15years and currently have one now. Hence how I found your post,as the anxiety is horrible.

But it's nice to hear of positive news.
