Father been diagnosed with tongue and throat cancer.

Hello everyone,

My father has been diagnosed with tongue and throat cancer. He has had a tube fitted for feeding (when needed) and starts 6wks of radiotherapy tomorrow.

Absolutely terrified of what's to come.

Wishing you all good health x

  • I wish your Dad all the best.

One day at a time. x

  • Thank you lovely.

It's a very frightening time for all the family but I know we'll support each other the best we can. X

  • I have been diagnosed with the same, stage 3 of tonsil, tongue and lymph node. I had my tube fitted last week and start my treatment tomorrow, 7 weeks radiotherapy with 2 chemotherapy doses.

Good luck to your dad. The treatment sounds horrible but has a good success rate.

All the best, hopefully both me and your dad will beat it.

  • Yes, I have heard the treatment is successful that's what I keep in mind. My Dad hasn't told me what stage cancer he has, just said it's localised and it hasn't spread anywhere else.

I wish you all the best and please keep in touch to let me know how you get on.

  • I would like to wish you all the best with your treatment.

I had a different cancer with surgery and then 4 rounds of chemo.

Has to be done, simple as that was my thinking, taking one day at a time and going to bed thinkind that's one more day to the end of treatment.

Felt pretty rubbish at times, seemed that no sooner had I got one lot of pills down it was time for the next lot.

Surprising how much better I felt when I had my week off the pills.

We have to focus on why we are putting up with the treatment... for it is doing the job to get us the result we want at the end of it.

  • Morning . I was diagnosed with Stage 4 ( although for throat cancer this is not  staged but sized  ) base of tongue cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes either sides of my neck . I had 6 weeks of radiotherapy, chemo was cancelled due  to Covid but as this is only a mop up with this type of cancer I wasn't worried . I also had a feeding tube if was a godsend for me.

Not going to sugar coat the treatment is awful everyday for 6 weeks takes its toll .
I finished my treatment on May 17th & it wasn't until 14 weeks post that I started to turn a corner . After effects for me haven't been very nice at all but it's different for everyone , BUT things will improve slowly . Two weeks ago I was given the all clear Woo ! It's  a very cruel ( I think ) treatment but has a very good outcome . Wish dad well . If you need any help or need to know if this is right & that especially after treatment ends please message me .. I found it was much worse once the treatment ended . All the best . He can do this and will meet other patients & probably make some friends.  X x

  • Thank you very much for your kind, honest words they mean a lot.

Wishing you all the best too. X

  • Good morning,

Sorry for the late reply, things have been very busy here with Dad and my daughter getting pneumonia and covid 19.

Dad has one week left of treatment which is something we're looking forward to and also something we're scared of as we don't know what to expect next.

His unable to eat now but us still managing small amounts of fluid orally. He's having a lot of trouble with thick saliva and pain so he's been prescribed patches of slow releasing pain killers and given mouthwashes along with every other medication and toothpaste you can think of.

All in all he's had a positive mindset to it and was lucky he's only started having side effects the past 2 weeks or so. However, he's becoming very tired now and worried about the future especially with Xmas on the way as that's his favourite time of year.

I hope your doing well and I'm so pleased to hear you've had the all clear.

Thank you for being here for support you're a very kind soul x
