Thyroid

Hi. I'm new to this forum. 8yrs ago I had a large goiter removed in my thyroid. Thankfully that was benign.  The past two months I've had a large lump between my collar bone. Went docs and sent me for a scan in the Saturday on the Tuesday hevrand to say he is sending me to a Ent specialist, well now I find that the waiting list is 50 weeks yes 50weeks. So Ive had to go private thankfully hubby has got bupa. Got appointment Oct 16th.. I'm freaking out as its a multi nodular of 4.5cm and I've read anything over 4 cm could be cancerous.  My lymph glands under my chin are swollen and a, slight sore throat. And I feel drained and so tired and depressed. I've also read that my tinnitus which started 3yrs ago could be because if the thyroid and migraines. Also swelling on my fingers and ankles. Are all These signs it could be C. I've lost my dad, bowl cancer, my brother 24 leukemia, my ex husband non hodgekins, thankfully he survived. Has any one had similar symptoms.

  • Hello there .

I am sorry to hear you are going through the worry at the moment.

Usually with cancer you have no symptoms, just a lump, and often quite small  so you do not know that you've got it.

My nodule was large and I got earaches with it as well as jaw ache later on as it was growing. But it's more to do with size of it (it was 7x5cm at the moment of removal). Large nodules tend to press on nerves and cause all these symptoms (throat aches, cough,  suffocating feeling, ear ache etc). Also your thyroid could be underactive, hence feeling tired.

In regards of lymphnodes under chin, I have one on the side where lump was, but during biopsy sonographer didn't think much of it. Neither did surgeon before operation.

If thyroid cancer spreads into lymphnodes, it tends to be the ones to the side of the neck, below the ears and on the back of the neck, but not under the chin ones, that's I was told.

My tumour turned out to be papillary carcinoma  but with no invasion or lymphnode spread.

You will never know by symptoms if its cancer or not. Best to have some biopsies done. Even then the answers may not be clear :(

Wishing you the best of luck

    Maryna

  • Hi. Thanks for your reply. I had a scan and the doc rang 2 days later to say they couldn't be sure what the multinodulars were cancer or not so sent me to see a specialist which I'm seeing in Oct 16th. Private as the wait for nhs is 50 weeks. I've already had one removed on the right which was a large goiter. This one is close to my collar bone under my Adam's apple and moves when I swollow. and 4.5cm which I keep reading anything over 4cm is more likely to be cancer. I have 2 lymph nodes swollen either side of the front of my neck under the chin and are aching. I'm so tired my thyroid  blood test came back as OK. I also read that it can cause tinnitus and dizzy spells which I have. I can't lie I'm worried sick.

  • Hi I'm at the diagnostic stage and potentially long wait for surgery due to current situation.

I wondered how you're doing? Sorry if you have updated elsewhere.

Hope your care and results have been as good as possible.
